s!s * # Last evening, when the Ex-Girls’ High School Club met in the lounge of the Otago Women’s Club, Mr T. Vernon Griffiths delighted his large audience by means of a lecture entitled “Music and Youth: A Challenge,” with illustrations by pupils of tbe Technical College. Mr Griffiths’s niain topic was the influence of music in the home, the school, and civic life, his plea for music being that it is better to do anything badly, than not do.it at all. The items given by the boys were violin duets, a duet for horn and cornet, and a trio for two clarinets and a saxophone. At the close of his talk, Mr Griffiths, who had been introduced by Miss F. M. Allen (president), was the subject of an appreciative vote of thanks, proposed by Miss Lucy Morton.

A “ mad-hatters' ” dance held by the spinsters and Benedicts of Kauru Hill proved ah outstanding success. There was a large gathering, and a very pleasant time was spent. The hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers, balloons, and greenery, and, with the smart frocks, created a very pleasing effect. During the evening novelty dances added to the enjoyment, of the function, the Monte Carlo being won by Miss M. Campbell and Mr Woods, and the lucky spot by Miss R. Symon and Mr N. Shefford. The " funny hats” competition was won by Miss. M. Dillon and Mr B. M‘Bean. Excellent music was supplied, and Mr Greaney carried out the duties of M.C. Mrs Ellis and Miss; Hughes played’extras, - Much credit for the success of the dance was due to the organising secretary (Miss Rowe), who was ably assisted by an energetic committee. "After All,” a play in three acts by John Yan Druten, was read before a crowded audience by members of the Playbox Chib last night. A modern play with unusual situations and frank dialogue, “After All ” was delicately handled by a thoroughly competent cast. Miss Margaret Matheson interpreted the part of Phyl Thomas—the principal feminine role —and gave a performance which created a very favourable impression. Mr Leslie Pithie shared the principal honours with Miss Matheson, appearing as Ralph Thomas, a wayward son who made a disastrous marriage and was finally glad to return to the bosom of his family.Mr Pithie handled the part with great skill. In the role of mother to these two, Mrs H. B. Pattrick gave a natural performance which was deserving of praise, another good character study of an old lady being presented by Miss Gladys Johnson,- who made her first appearance at the Playbox., Other parts were well handled by Misses Victoria Jefferson, Marion Webster, and R.
