GENERAL NEWS

The monthly social of the Scottish Society of Dunedin (Inc.) was held on Saturday evening, when Mr W. P. Smith (chairman) presided. A hearty welcome was extended to members and friends. During the evening Miss Barron rendered the songs, "My Ain Folk" and " Caller Herrin." Mr W. Smith gave a nice rendering of "Little Scottish Home," a local composition by Mrs D. Smith, and "The White Dove." Mr E. G. Johnston sang " My Ain Wee Hoose " and "Annie Laurie," the accompanist being Miss Matheson, who, with Mr M'Glashan on the violin, supplied the music for the dance which followed. The combined Highland dancers were seen in the Highland fling, and other dances were given by Master J. Fleet (Irish jig), Miss Audrey Ramsay (seann triubhais) and Miss Nancy Matheson (clog dance). Several new members were added to the roll, and the chairman made special reference to the celebration of Scotland's national day in November. The patients at Orokonui Homo, Waitati, were entertained on Saturday evening by the Anderson's Bay Glee Club, under the conductorship, of Mr H. Coop. The glee singers, numbering about 30, presented a good programme. Part songs were rendered, including " Viking Song," " Moonlight," " Song for Spring," " Sweet and Low," " 0 Peaceful Night," "Drink to Me only with Thine Eyes," "The Lass with the Delicate Air," and "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." The solo and chorus, " Land of Hope and Glory," was given by Miss Fenton and the Clee Club, and songs were contributed by the following:—Mr H. A. Johnston, Miss Fenton, Mr 11. Coop, Miss Fowler, Mrs Smith, and Mr T. S. Shaw. Recitations were given by Miss M. E. Somerville and Mr T. S. Shaw. Two violin solos were played by Miss Smith. Miss Marjorie M'Adam was the accompanist. At the conclusion of the concert Mr Brighton, the attendant in charge, thanked Mr Coop and the Glee Club on behalf of the staff and patients, and thanks to the performers was also expressed by Mr Steven on behalf of the Patients and Prisoners' Aid Society.
