YACHTS MEET AGAIN TO-DAY.
NEWPORT, September 15. (Received Sept. 16, at 8 p.m.)
After five hours and a-half of splendid sailing by Mr Harold Vanderbilt's Rainbow, half a mile from the line and a mile ahead of the Endeavour, a cairn prevented the finishing of the race in the prescribed time and it was declared no contest. The defender and the dial* lenger will meet again on Monday. At the start of the contest there was a seven-mile south-east breeze, but the sea was remarkably smooth, and handling the American yacht as if it were a toy in his hand Vanderbilt beat the Endeavour by a minute at the start, but Mr Sopwith w,as soon in hot pursuit. It was either's race for a time, and then came a tacking duel, with Genoa jibs. The Endeavour's crew could, not sheet their Genoa as fast as the Rainbow's, with its great coffee-grinder winch to raise its Genoa sheet in a hurry. Rainbow gained an additional lmin 46sec lead in the last four miles and iu a calm the craft drifted a little. Mrs Sopwith sailed as timekeeper. She is the first woman ever listed as n member of a crew in an America's Cup race. She later acted as an observer in the Rainbow and did her job well.
A great flotilla, including the Nourmahal, carrying President Roosevelt, watched the contest over the 30-mile windward and leeward course, which was patrolled by Coastguard cutters and naval destroyers.
