LEITH AMENITIES SOCIETY
ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the Dunedin North and Leith Amenities Society, to be presented at the annual meeting tonight, states, inter alia: —• When the society was revived last year the membership was very low, and the committee was doubtful if it could carry on during the very trying times. It was decided, however, to keep the society going even if the membership remained low, as the committee felt that there was much need for the society in looking after the welfare of this part of the city. It was decided to institute a thorough canvass of the district, and for this purpose Mr Henderson was appointed agent for the society. As a result of his work the membership is now over 200, with excellent prospects of further additions. As a further effect of this canvass much interest'hae been created, and many residents have welcomed the opportunity of becoming members. The committee met Mr Tannock, superintendent of reserves, and also Mr Marlow, chairman of the Dunedin City Council Works Committee, and placed before them suggestions in respect to the reserves and necessary works for the district. Several matters, including flood protection, street lighting, tar-seal-ing Btreets were discussed. The thanks of the committee are due to these gentlemen for their sympathetic hearing of the suggestions. Some of the matters have already been attended to. The committee also had two deputations to council committees and received a very good hearing from the councillors. The question of flood protection had been kept steadily in view, and was one of the matters dealt with by the deputation to the Works Committee. The principal improvement required i 6 a new bridge at Woodhaugh, and the committee i s of the opinion that this matter should be kept before the council till it has been brought about. It is also necessary that additional openings for the overflow waters at flood time should be provided at the George street and King street bridges.
