THE LEAD MARKET IMPORTS TO ENGLAND. LONDON, September 14. Pig lead: Imports, 31,419 tons (Australian 16,992); exports, 701 tons. SOUTHLAND MARKETS (From Oob Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, September 15. STOCK REPORT. The stock market continues good for all classes, and values are firm at late quotations. Eat cattle are coming to hand in regular numbers, and with a good inquiry from the north values are inclined to harden. Fat sheep have been offering freely during the week, and competition from outside sources hag had the effect of raising values. The store sheep market is very buoyant, and at the sales competition has been keen for all classes. The store cattle market is quiet, with very few lines offering. Values, however, are slightly better than those recorded in recent reports. Fat Cattle.—Prime heavy bullocks, £8 15s to £10; medium-weight prime, £6 10s to £7 10s; lighter, down to £5 15s; prime heavy heifers, £6 to £7; medium, £4 to £5; prime heavy cows, £6 to £7 ss; medium, £4 to £5; lighter, f 3 to £3 10s; vealers, £1 to £1 ss; runners, £1 10s to £2 10s. Fat Sheep.—Extra prime heavy wethers, to 335; prime heavy, 28s to 30s; medium-weight, 26s to 275; lighter, to 245; prime heavy young ewes, 24s to 265; prime heavy ewes, 21s 6d to 22s 6d; medium, 18s 6d to £1; lighter, 15s to 16s. Store Sheep.—Good Romney ewe hoggets, 26s to 28s; medium, 20s to 22s 6d; wether hoggets, 15s to 18s; four, six, and eight-tooth ewes, 30s to 345; failingmouthed, 22s 6d to 255. Store Cattle. —Three and four-year bullocks, £4 10s to £5 10s; two and-three-vear, £3 15s to £4 ss; yearling, £1 15s to £2 10s. GRAIN REPORT. Oats. —This market since last report has still further hardened, and a second shipment of, roughly, 4000 sacks of A grade to London has further strengthened the position. Current quotations, f.0.b., for A grade Gartons are 2s 8d per bushel, B's 2s sd"; while, on account of the shortage of A's, some holders are asking rather higher figures, or by a cheap method of dressing turning B's into A's rather than accept lower rates. At this time of the year very little remains in farmers' hands, and this is more pronounced than usual. Probably clue to the return of the horse, the man on the land is, in many instances, requiring oats for feeding purposes. Ryegrass.—There are continued inquiries from northern centres, and the market remains firm at recent rates, and with a somewhat better tone. Local values are, for 281 bto 291 b machinedressed seed with a germination in excess of 90 per cent., somewhat better than 4s 6d per bushel, f.o.b. This business of necessity is done on sample, and much depends on the character of the seed and its relation to values. Crested Dogstail.—This seed has still further appreciated, prices ranging according to quality at from Is Id to Is 3d per lb. The latter being seed of exceptional quality. LONDON PRODUpE MARKET The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office under date September 14:— Frozen Meat.—Larger supplies of wethers have caused prices to weaken. There is a moderate demand for ewes, while prices are a shade lower. For lambs trade is slow owing to heavy supplies of fresh meat. The demand for seconds is falling off. Wethers, light s§d to 51d; heavy, 4jd to 4Jd; ewes, 3id to 4Jd; lambs, twos 7d to 7sd, eights 6|d to 6fd, fours, 6Jd to 6j}d, seconds 6jd to 6fd. ___________ FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD Reilly's report selling:--Per Dozen. —Spring cabbage. MINING NEWS BELL-HOOPER RETURN (Per Uniteu Press association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 16. The Bell-Hooper Cromwell Gold, Ltd., return for the week was 31oz 6dwt. BRIAN BORU . RETURN 'Pes United Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, September 16. The Brian Boru Dredge return for last week was 17oz lOdwt for 106 hours dredging. BIG RIVER STRIKE The Dunedin Stock Exchange has received a telegram from the secretary of the Big River Mines, Ltd., announcing that a reef has been intersected in new unexplored country in No. 4 level, north drive. The lode is now five feet wide without disclosing the hanging wall. The stone is carrying good visible gold and looks promising. RECORD GOLD PRICE The recent high values of gold were reflected in a record price for a parcel from Australia sold in London on August 30. The transaction was on behalf of the Port Kembla branch of the Electrolytic -Refining and Smelting Company, Ltd., the return to the seller in Australian currency being £8 12s Id an ounce fine. This is the highest price sever returned to an Australian seller of gold. KUALA KAMPAR DIVIDEND A dividend of 3d sterling a share, payable on September 27, has been declared by Kuala Kampar Tin Fields, Limited, Malay States. Shares are 10s paid. The last dividend, also of 3d a share, was paid in March. GOLCONDA MINES REPORT The mine manager reports as follows: During the week the following work has been carried out: —Driving was continued on the hanging wall portion of the main reef. The mineral baud is veering away to the left, and the course of the drive is nearly parallel to the slide, which is in the footwall side about 15 or 20 feet. We put a small cross-cut out into the hanging wall, and there, is about 18 inches of quartz showing, composed of mineral and bluish white quartz. Further in from the mineral seam there is a fair amount of water coming from it. If the quartz keeps on the same course it will junction with the reef that we discontinued driving on in the old hanging-wall cross-cut. On the drive on the reef since we picked the quartz up we have been driving in nearly a semi-circle, and that is the reason why we have not yet cut the main slide. This is apparently tyhat occurred according to the plan of the Old Cambria workings when they got their patch. ' BIG RIVER REPORT The Big River report for the week ended September 13 is as follows: No. 3 crosscut: Distance driven seven feet. Distance from south drive 217 feet. Distance from shaft 414 feet. The country is still hard. No. 3 stopes: Four men stoping below No. 3 south level. Stone two feet six inches wide. No. 4 north drive: Three hundred and eleven feet from" shaft. Advanced 10 feet on reef track. Cut reef three feet wide carrying gold. A most promising discovery. No. 1 level: The drive on the fault line holed into old workings. Prospecting operations will be continued from these old workings. A later note states that the reef in No. 4 north drive has widened out to five feet without disclosing any hanging wall, and that gold can be seen in stone in all parts of the face. TASMANIAN MINE TO REOPEN The Tasmanian Mine, once the greatest gold-producing mine in Tasmania, which ceased operations 20 years ago, is to be reopened in the near future. It is Stated that a new company has been floated in London, with £200,000 capital, and that additional leases in the Beaconsfield area have been reserved for a new English company. The Premier of Tasmania, Mr A. G. Ogilvie, said recently that the requests of the London promoters for electric power at the cheapest possible rate would 1 be given every consideration.

Paterson, Ltd., report having submitted by public auction at their rooms on Saturday on behalf of the Dunedin City Corporation, nine corporation building leases. These were disposed of at the upset prices to the present lessee in each case. MERCHANDISE MARKET The Port Whangarei arrived at the week-end with a cargo of sugar. The next sugar boat will be the Kiwitea, due on the 20th. An advance of 20s per ton has taken place in the price of English bulk cornflour. , A further small shipment of seeded lexia raisins, in 12oz and 16oz packets, has reached the market from Australia. Merchants have received documents for Eastern produce ex the Narbada, due to arrive towards the end of the month. The sago, tapioca', and Indian lentils on this vessel will snow merchants.a much higher landed cost. The Narbada will also land full supplies of Singapore pineapples. The Rotorua, which is due on September 19, will bring several lines- of Morton's manufactures. Advices from the East indicate a higher landed cost in the price of shelled walnuts. Some merchants report being short of supplies to carry them over till the new season's walnuts arrive, probably about the end of December. Beehive safety matches have been reduced in price. These matches are made up in Wellington. • Kellogg's whole wheat flakes, a new line, has made an appearance on the market. It is reported that there will be a short pack of pink and sockeye salmon, and that higher prices must be expected. It is also reported that stocks of these two lines are getting into short compass in merchants' hands. The new season's pack should reach.here towards the end of November or early in December. Bulk white pepper and ground ginger have been advanced in price. Tinned are unchanged. Stoned dates are getting into short compass. Advice regarding the arrival of the vessel carrying the new season's dates states that it will not reach here from Busra. via Australia, till the end of December—too late to meet the Christmas demand. JAPANESE WOOL BUYING Mr T. Nagai, wool department manager of the Nippon Wobllen Textile Company, Ltd., Kobe, is reported to have stated at Brisbane that Japan had no intention of curtailing wool buying in Australia as retaliation to England's attitude toward Japan's cotton exports to Great Britain. He believed that Japan would be in the market for at least an additional 100,000 bales over last year's purchases. Increased' purchases, however, depended on prices. There would have to be a substantial drop on the previous year's values before Japan would enter into heavy buying.
