PALMERSTON The annual match between Otago University and the Eastern District Subunion was played at Palmerston on Saturday. The game was bright and open, both sides throwing the ball about freely, and it was probably the most interesting game seen at Palmerston this season. The teams were as follows: —University (Blue): M'Farland, Watt, Roy, Maakel.l, M'Carthy, Ryder, Emmanuel, Wilson, Anderson, M'Cartney, Harrison (captain), Mack, Maslin, Simmers, Sincock. Eastern District (Black): Bell, M'Knight, Hannah. Murray, Samson, Davis (captain), Frater, Sutherland. Penny, M'Millan, Crossan. Dalgleish, Roberts, Clearwater, Kirkwood. Eastern District kicked off. Davis fielded a penalty inside the University twenty-five and sent through Samson to Davis, who potted a neat goal. Eastern District 4, University nil. M'Millan dribbled through, but M'Farland put the visitors on attack. Watt was upended near the line, and the Blacks forced twice in quick succession. The University forwards, led by Harrison, were stopped by Davis, but shortly afterwards Harrison scored at the end of a forward rush M'Farland's kick failed. Eastern District 4, University 3. The visitors were receiving numerous penalties, but did not succeed in adding to the score. The home side attacked after half time, but M'Knight dropped a pass from Samson when near the line. Crossan broke away, and Samson potted and missed, University forcing. Davis cut through, but a penalty relieved. The Blacks went straight back to the attack, and Dalgleish dribbled through for a try by the posts. Davis converted. Shortly after Watt sped through the defence and went behind the posts M'Farland missed the kick. _ Eastern District 9, University 6. The visitors again attacked, but M'Millan broke away, supported by Crossan, and went to the line. M'Farland's clearing kick hit Samson and rebounded, M'Knight winning the race for ball. Bell missed a difficult kick, and the final whistle went with the score: Eastern District 12, Otago University 6. Mr C. M. Sloane (Seacliff) was the referee.

The final of the Eastern District Rugby Football Sub-union's junior knockout competition was played on the Palmerston Show Grounds on Saturday between Palmerston juniors and Merton. The game was keenly contested, and resulted in a win for Palmerston. A meeting of the committee controlling the dental clinic at the Palmerston District High School was held on Friday night. Mr Ford (chairman) presided. Accounts amounting to £7 15s 6d were passed for payment. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr W. M'Laren (Shag Point) for his donation of £1 Is to the funds. The matter of pupils from outlying schools affiliated with the central clinic attending Palmerston for treatment and finding the nurse's time full was discussed at length, and it was decided that in future these pupils receive preferential treatment. The annual social evening of the Palmerston Rugby Football Club was held on Saturday night, when the Mayor of Palmerston (Mr W. E. Galloway), members of the Eastern District Sub-union, and the visiting Otago University team were present. The president (Mr A. M'Gregor) occupied the chair. During the evening reference was made by the president of the Eastern District Rugby Football Sub-union (Mr R. M'lntosh) to one of the club's most prominent members, Mr lan Lang, who was dangerously ill in the Dunedin Hospital. Mr M'lntosh stated this young man was an Eastern District senior representative footballer, a Waihemo County representative cricketer, and a prominent member of the Palmerston Lawn Tennis Club, and the sympathy of the gathering and hopes for his speedy recovery were expressed. RANFURLY The monthly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Maniototo Subunion was held in Ranfurly last Monday. Mr J M. Morgan (chairman) presided. The Ranfurly Domain Foard wrote requesting a grant of £3O for the purpose of carrying out certain improvements to, the grounds. The secretary of the board (Mr A. M'Lachlan) attended the meeting, and explained that it was intended to fence off the trees growing on the domain and then graze sheep on the ground. It was resolved that the sum of f3O be granted to the Domain Board on condition that the board allows the sub-union the free use of the ground for, the holding of football matches for a period of 12 years from - April, 1935. Mr Fraser gave notice of his intention to move at the annual meeting of delegates that the rules be amended to provide that a member of the committee who absented himself from two consecutive meetings without leave should be liable to forfeit his seat on the committee and that in such a case the committee be granted power to fill the vacancy. Mr Morgan gave notice that he intended to move at the annual meeting of delegates that in future the. county tournament be run on the same lines as that adopted by the Hockey, Association. TAPANUI Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., conducted a stock sale oh. Friday, when there was a good yarding. The attendance was not large, but the entry into the market of two outside buyers helped the sale , considerably, and good prices were realised. The sheep yarded consisted of 898 stores, and were all sold with the exception of 142 wethers, which were passed in at 23s 9d. There was a good yarding of cows and yearling heifers. Cows were not wanted, and the heifers were passed in at 19s. The following is the range of prices:—153 one-shear ewes, 31s Id; 114 two-shear ewes, 30s Id; 75 three-shear ewes, 28s 8d; 63 four-shear ewes, 26s 2d; 42 fan. ewes, 18s; 100 ewe hoggets, 27s 3d; 102 ewe hoggets, 24s 6d; 21 ewe hoggets, 16s; 18 m.s. hoggets, 16s Id; 23 m.s. hoggets, 14s; 45 wether hoggets, 18s.
