DENTAL CLINIC FOR OWAKA

TO THE EDITOR,

Sir,— Our headmaster has wasted no time in replying to our local doctor. Before asking Mr Remlle a few questions, I wish to ask yon. Sir, if civil sen-ants are now allowed freedom of speech and the use of the newspapers to air their views. If so, T, for one, am glad to bear Hmt they have at last conic into their °"mt Reudlc states that when he took up duties at this school “he noticed many things would be needed if the school was to be brought up to date and function as an efficient establishment/’ So much for our past headmaster and secondary school masters! 1 wonder what they will say to (his? . With reference to the Queen Carnival funds, first, is it not a fact that portion of this money was to be expended on a dental clinic? I, for one, was certainly under this impression when the carnival was first mooted. Secondly, rumour hath it that four tennis courts are to he laid down at the school. Is this so? Why four? Of course, these fire move important than children’s teeth and health! , I am not against sport at all, but I strongly protest against £4OO and subsidy from the Education Department being spent on sport. The local Football Club, Cricket Club, Hockey Club, apd Tennis Club can absorb all the ex-pupi ls and secondary pupils, if they so desire to throw in their lot with them. Lastly, Mr Remlle says: “Had there been no better proposal forthcoming, 1 could not have supported the doctor’s recommendation,’’ etc. Before this corre-

spondence goes any further, let the School Committee, through your columns, place its position before the public—which so nobly answered its call—and tell us how the money is to be expended, and let us know its proposals, which are purported to be better than the doctor's proposal. I think “ Ratanui ” had better pay a visit to the district before he rushes again into print.—l am, etc., Dental Clinic Supporter.

Owaka, September 12. [The question which the writer of the above letter asks with reference to public servants docs not arise in this instance. — Ed. O.D.T.]
