OJAGO ASSOCIATION’S REPORT

The annual report of the Otago Ladies' Bowling Association, to be presented at the annual meeting, states, inter alia—

The association has 25 clubs on its books, with a membership of 460. The finances are in a sound position, the association having started the year with a credit balance of £2G 5s 4d and finished with one of £46 14s sd. Sixteen clubs entered the interclub games, which were played on Tuesdays. With few exceptions all the matches were played according to programme, and were thoroughly enjoyed by the players. The competition for the Donald Stuart banner created great interest, and resulted in a win for Anderson’s Bay, to which club the congratulations of the association are due. It was decided to inaugurate interclub games for the 0.L.8.A. full members, assisted by sufficient associate members of the 0.L.8.A. to complete three rinks. “

The opening of the 1933-34 season took the form of a gala day on the 0.L.8.A. green on September 23. Several rink games were played, also drawing and driving competitions. to heavy rain interfering-the competitions were completed on the Saturday. The green was splendidly grassed and general satisfaction was expressed at its appearance and playing qualities. Mixed rinks were played at a tournament on December 7. Nine full rinks were occupied. It was the first time in the bowling history of Dunedin that 72 men and women bowlers participated at one time on the one green. The green was in excellent order and the weather was perfect. The conditions and the good comradeship displayed made the time pass all too quickly. Thirty-eight entries were received for the association Singles event held on December 13. Almost perfect weather conditions prevailed and the green was very keen. Eight rinks from the 0.L.8.A. played against four rinks from the Phoenix .Club (Oaraaru), and four rinks from Awamoa Club (Oamaru) on the Phoenix green on November 30. In the aggregate the 0.L.8.A. had a margin of six points, winning against Awamoa and losing to Phoenix. The eighth annual tournament was held on Tuesday, February 20, and following days on the St. Kilda, Kaikorai, N.E. Valley, Caversham, Green Island, Mornington, Roslyn and 0.L.8.A. greens. The 0.L.8.A. green was headquarters. The entries were as follows:—Rinks 30, doubles 02, singles 48. Entries were.received from 17 clubs. The visiting bowlers were entertained at a friendly game on the 0.L.8.A. green on February 24. It was considered that this tournament was one of, if not the most satisfactory held to date. A team of 28 players went to Invercargill on March 7, and played a sevenrink game the same afternoon against the Southland representatives. The match was played on the Southland Club’s green in broken weather, and the game resulted in a win for Otago by 132 to 111.

In the Champion of Champions competition, which was played on March 15 and IG, 14 clubs sent in their champions. The green was in splendid condition, and a first-class display of bowling was provided. Mrs Beveridge, of the Caversham Club, carried off the Champion of Champions title for 1034. Mrs Whale, of the Mornington Club, was runner-up. The final rink game for the Hislop Cup was played on Saturday, Match 17, between the Green Island and NorthEast Valley Clubs. After an interesting game the Green Island Club proved victorious by four points. This event marked the closing of the green for the season.

The Easter games, the first of their kind, were played under ideal conditions on April 2 and 3, and proved most popular. t No fewer than 40 players journeyed to Christchurch to take part in the Christcliuch ladies’ tpunament, held on March 20, and won the Singles, Rinks ami Pairs events. The eighth birthday of the association was celebrated by a dance and progressive card evening on October 10. A very happy atmosphere prevailed. The president (Mrs Adess) referred to Mrs Cooke’s long connection with the association, and her admirable services as secretary for a number of years. Mrs Cooke had organised the meeting in 1925, at which it had been decided to form a Ladies’ Bowling Association; she was appointed its first president, and had served continuously as secretary ever since. As a mark of esteem, Mrs Adess presented Mrs Cooke with a Jacobean tea wagon.

The executive assisted with the entertainment of the ladies who came to Dunedin with their husbands for the New Zealand Bowling Association tournament. The visitors were warmly wcl-

coined by the president (Mrs Adess) and by Mrs Rowley, wife of the president of the New Zealand Bowling Association. Members of the Australian bowling party were also entertained. An invitation was received from the secretary of the Victorian Ladies’ Bowling Association, asking if eight players would attend the Women’s Centenary Bowling Carnival, to be held from No-' veinber 19 to 20, 1934, To date six players are available, and Mrs Cooke lias been appointed manageress of the party, which will leave on October 30. The second green of tile association was laid down in the spring of last year under the supervision of Mr D, Tannock and Mr J. Knox. Young poplar trees, 11 feet in height, have been planted outside the iron fence as a wdnd screen.

Owing to numerous requests from lady bowlers who reside in the south end of the city, the executive decided to ask the City Council to reserve a portion of the ground at Bathgate Park. This request has been granted..
