“ART IN NEW ZEALAND”

In the September issue of the quarterly “ Art in New Zealand ” contributions of pictorial and literary interest are, as usual, judiciously blended. case of artists as well as other people, impressions of a new country‘are apt to affect, the sharpness of those upon which they are superimposed. The fact lends interest to the reflections of Christopher Perkins, following his recent return to the Old Country, which are embodied in an article entitled “The Temptations of England.” The writer ; has something apposite to say. concerning exhibitions, galleries, and artists of the day,-and finisues this on a note which will strike in many a responsive chord—“ The greatest temptation of England is the desire to return to the village and to surrender completely to its charms,” \Wobd engravings by John Buckland Wright, a native of Dunedin now established in Paris, provide material for a well-illustrated article. The two coloured plates included in the issue .show excellent reproductions of A. l'\ Nicoil's portrait of Professor T. H. Easterfield and' J. C. Duncan’s “Mamuku Valley,” awarded the Bledialoe medal for landscape painting in Auckland. In black and white are a figure study by Mrs Tripe, examples of sculpture by W. H, Wright, of Auckland, and specimens of work done by pupils of Wellington Technical College. In verse is a lengthy, “Meditation on Histoic Change,” by J.C. Beaglehole, and further reading is provided in such features as the London Letter, reviews, and art notes relative to the doings of the societies in the different centres.
