NORTH OTAGO

ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT NORTH OTAGO ANGLING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING There was an excellent attendance of members at the annual ,of the North Otago.Angling,-Club, which was presided over by' the president (Mr C. Stringer). , ... , THe past ■ seasons activities showed a gratifying increase in 'the “ membership, with increased-finances- and better support: ifi' -,the- -club, competitions. , The policy suggested ’by Mr “Main of stocking the Kakanui/-River for-four years with 200,000 -fry- each year would' end- this season, and it ■ was; hopedythat the.■ -VV aitaki Acclimatisatibn--.Society,' would consult ;Mr Main before. I deciding on a policy for future.‘-seasons.The fishing and fly-casting competitions-wei’e -■ proving very - popular, and thanks , were due .to the North Otago Motor Association for placing the grounds at the disposal of the society for the fly-casting competitions. During the season an endeavour was made to collect further data- for the Freshwater Research Committee, but the efforts of the members did not come up to the previous season’s in respect to the number of scale .envelopes collected, this being due to tbe pOor catches, recorded by anglers, the envelopes numbering 556 and diaries 13: Mr • Parrott s (biologist) findings on the scale samples sent -in the previous season proved very instructive and interesting, and Mr Parrott would lecture on last season s findings towards the end of the month. It was very gratifying to members to. know that their efforts were appreciated by the Research Committee, and' it, was hoped that the same keenness would be shown by anglers during the_; coming season in collecting the necessary data. The co-operation of the Waitaki Society in fostering their efforts was much appreciated. It was interesting to note that the average weights of fish was in cxeese of the previous season. Mr W. Yorston had created a New Zealand record in supplying the daily temperature of the Kakanui River, and Mr Parrott could-' not speak too highly of this member’s work. Without this temperature chart;the rest of the work, would be to a large extent nullified. Six eel pots had been’ constructed and looked after by various members. Messrs Carlson and E. Beswick, jun., with one of .these pots, had caught and destroyed no fewer than 216 eels. In an endeavour to definitely ascertain the sea and river life of trout liberated in the Kakanui River, it was hoped, with the assistance of the Waitaki Society, to tag 500 of the smaller fish. The Club had been unfortunate in losing the services of one of the most valued members in Mr Arthur Edwards, who .pad left the district. The annual smoke concert was again a great success, members beingvfavoured with addresses by Mr Scott Maim and Mr H. Williams, of’the Otago Society. Thinks were due, to the Waitaki Society for its-co-operation; in .any project that had for its bbjCct 1 anything for the benefit of anglers; to Mr Piper, who was only too willing to assist at all times: to "Minnow” for his reports; and all who had given prizes and assisted in-any way. The annual report and balance sheet showing-a credit balance of £9 17s 5<J, were adopted, and the chairman congratulated the club on its very successful: season, thanking membersMor their support during his term of office.
