MAORI BOY KILLED (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, September 14. A Maori boy, Claude Dennis, aged nine, at Manutuke, was struck bv a passing motor car this morning and received injuries from which he died after removal to Cook Hospital. Severe burns to the body were received by an employee of the Maungaturoto Hotel, Edward Mahoney, aged 50, a single man, when his clothes were set alight while he was pouring out benzine. The man had been employed at the hotel only since Monday. Mahoney had gone to a building about 50 yards from the hotel to replenish the tank of a petrol engine used to generate electric power, and as ho was pouring the benzine the furhes were ignited by a candle lantern which was standing a short distance away. The benzine was splashed over his clothing, which was quickly in flames. Mahoney rushed into the yard.shouting for assistance. His cries were heard by the occupant of an upstairs room, who stripped the bed clothes from the bed and threw them from the window to the yard below. Attracted by the shouts, others in the hotel hastened to the scene, and they used the bed clothes to smother the flames. Mahoney’s clothes were almost completely destroyed by the flames and the man suffered severe burns practically a 1.1 over his body. His condition is very serious. FALL INTO HOT POOL GIRL DIES IN HOSPITAL.

(Per United Press Association.) ROTORUA, September 14. Another thermal pool tragedy occurred to-day when Nona Pettit, a 20-year-old girl, died in the Rotorua Hospital as the result of a fall into a hot pool ju Kuirau Reserve on Thursday evening. Apparently the girl, accompanied by a male companion, went to the reserve shortly after 0 o’clock with the intention of bathing in one of the larger pools. She left the water before her companion in order to dress, but while passing along the narrow path between two small hot pools she slipped and fell. Her companion heard a splash and a scream, and, clambering out of the water, found the girl just coming to the surface. lie dragged her out and immediately took her home, summoning a doctor e.n route. Miss Pettit was ordered to hospital, and died there this morning. An inquest was opened for identification purposes before Mr W. L. Richards, coroner, this afternoon, and adjourned sine die. This is the ninth tragedy that has occurred in connection with these pools during the past 35 years, and it is understood that instructions have been issued to have fences erected round them. Both suffered severe concussion. but their condition is satisfactory. TWO MEN INJURED MOTORIST AND PEDESTRIAN. (Peb United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 14. Alfred Reginald Newbury, Kingsley street, Sydenham, an old age pensioner, aged about 70, and Victor Sayers, of Fisher street, New Brighton, a youth, were both admitted to the Public Hospital this evening in an unconscious condition and with head injuries. Saycr*, who was riding a motor cycle, struck Newbury in Carlyle street, Sydenham, shortly before 7 o’clock. Sayers later recovered consciousness, but Newbury, with a fractured base of skull and suffering from loss of blood, is still unconscious and bis condition is critical. MOTORIST INJURED COLLISION WITH ELECTRIC LIGHT POLE. (Peb United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, September 14. A visitor to Invercargill, George Townsbend, whose address is believed to be 93 Hobson street, Auckland, was taken to hospital this evening iu an unconscious condition with head injuries due to the car he was driving coming into a head-on collision with an electric light pole. His condition is reported to bo serious, but not critical.
