“RED” UPRISING
RHODE ISLAND STATE GOVERNOR’S DECLARATION (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) PROVIDENCE, September 13. (Received Sept. 14, at 8.30 p.m.) Governor Green informed an extraordinary session of the State Legislature, summoned to deal with the emergency, that Rhode Island was faced not with a textile strike, but with “a Communist uprising.” He asked for authority to call Federal troops into the State and for an appropriation of 200,000 dollars with which to enrol 1000 world war veterans as special State policemen. President Roosevelt had a telephonic conversation with Governor Green today, and the situation was outlined to the President, who thereafter said he stood ready to order Federal troops to intervene at a moment’s notice.
Rioting throughout last night was general in several towns besides Saylesville, Woohscoket being particularly affected. One person was killed and several . were wounded. Shops were smashed and looted and other property destroyed. The Governor this morning issued a general order to the police forces in the State to arrest and hold for examination every known Communist for possible connection with the riot* throughout the State.
