A Lancashire dilemma was referred to by Mr Walter Elliot, the British Minister pf Agriculture, in the House of Commons recently. Lancashire, he said, had more hens than people, and therefore, they wanted imports of eggs, and particularly of Chinese liquid eggs, to be prohibited. But at the same time they wanted to sell more textiles to China, and they demanded that China should pay for them. Not only has Lancashire more hens than any other county, but its hens lay more eggs—the average is 15 per cent, above that for England ns a whole. And this lead has been maintained. although all over the country the liens arc laying 20 per cent, more eggs than five years ago.
