TANKER BUFFETED IN STORM. A hard battle with the cyclonic storm In the Tasmhn Sea was won by the world’s oldest oil tanker, the J. B. Aug. Kessler, which arrived at Auckland last Saturday from Ballkpapan. A small amount of damage was done, and the starboard lifeboat was lifted out of Its chocks when-a heavy sea was taken aboard amidships. The tanker was hove-to for 22 hours, at the same time as the Marama and Narbada were getting the worst of the gale. , , , A spell of fair weather was enjoyed after the tanker left Ballkpapan, In the Dutch East Indies, on August 19. After landing the pilot at Brisbane on September 1 she steamed through a strong freshening south-westerly wind which by the next day had developed into a whole gale. High confused seas swept the decks, and the main deck was awash fore and aft. It was found necessary to put the old ship’s nose Into It, and from mid-day on September 2 she was hovc-to for nearly a day, riding out the gale, which brought squalls of hurricane force and continual clouds of spray. Rough conditions continued until September 5, when the tanker ran out of the huge swell of the 8 TTie tC B. Aug. Kessler was built at Rotterdam in 1902, and for the early years of her life she was a coal-burner. She was later converted to oil furnaces. She Is named after her Dutch owner, one of the pioneers In the oil trade from the Dutch East Indies. Although this is her first visit to New Zealand, she has called at practically every seaport country In the world.
