AUSTRALIAN HOCKEY TEAM

WIN AGAINST HAWKE’S BAY (Per United Press Association) HASTINGS, September 13. Combination and fitness, especially the former, were responsible for the Australian hockey representatives defeating Hawke’s Bay here to-day by four goals to one, in the presence of over 1000 people. The game was a particularly fast one throughout and always interesting.

The first spell was unexpectedly very even, Hawke’s Bay more than holding their own and showing surprising defensive ability. The spell ended without any goals being scored. After the change over, Hawke’s Bay attacked strongly during the first 15 minutes and opened the scoring, Fitzmaurice finding the nets. From this stage on the Australians settled down to make effective use of their superior combination and team play. The score was quickly evened by Stenning, but it was some time before the home defence was again pierced. However, about 10 minutes before time Australia rattled home three goals in quick time, scored by Penman (two) and Milner, Hawke’s Bay tiring badly and feeling the effects of the early fast play.
