By Senxinel. Nominations are due to-day for the Dunedin Jockey Club spring meeting. The Paladin gelding Blazon is now in J. Rose’s stable at Oamaru. , The nominations for the Geraldine meeting totalled 374, or 52 more than last year. ■ Some MTlean Stakes candidates are likely to be seen out at the Oamaru meeting. Trumpet Blast should be improved by hia recent races at Riccarton, where he displayed promising form. Elgindale ran lua beat race .when he finished second to Travenna in the Longbeach Handicap, but the latter won nicely at the finish. Top Rank and Trumpet Blast were first and second ; in the Cashmere Plate, and they may be prominent again if raced at Ashburton. Southdown has'.been shaping well in hia work, but even so, may find it beyond his powers to i give Fracas 171 b Over six furlongs.;’ : .c ;

Dismiss makes a noise, but it may not stop him from getting over six furlongs. He was. troubled wjth the same complaint as a two-year-old.

■ The heavy going may have favoured Travenna on the final t day- of ■ the-National meeting-; when he won in rather convinc-ing'-style. He will have another chance to show .his worth at Ashburton. ■ ‘ Cottingham was finishing on at the right end of'his races at the Grand National meeting, . and the mile journey ;in the Lbngbeach Handicap: may be in ’his 'favour." - ;/■

6. H. Humphries will have the mount on Southdown, Bella Rosa, Cheap Money, and Some Shamble at Ashburton. A. Russell will" ride Trumpet Blast and Silver Sight. ,

Master Reynard was. fancied for the Longbeach Handicap, but faded at the finish in the heavy going, the six furlongs taking Imin. 16 4-ssec. He may do better on firm going at Ashburton.

Cheap Money finished, in. front of Master - Reynard in the Longbeach. Handicap run on the last day of the National meeting. At Ashbunrton, Cheap Money meet* Master Reynard on 21b better terms.. . - > , « •

A The offer of £7OOO a , year by the Aga Khan to >Gordbn Richards; .which sets a record for the British turf, recalls' the fact thatl the -first- retainer .accepted by Fred Archer was' £IOO a, year.-, //;

'•Training, operations at/Riccarton on Tuesday: were ■ handicapped by bad Weather.' The horse* ■ that' raged. at the Christchurch Hunt meeting and'; Grand Nktidjial meetihg will- have an advantage ovSf those making '.their first' start, for the season at* Ashburton and 'Geraldine.

Very : large ' entriea -were received by tbe ; Takapunk:-Jockey Club for its special race* the; Takapuna, ■ Pupuke, .Wynyard, and • Hauraki- Plates, 348 oemg theic events. .The Takapuna Plate and ' the Pupuke Plate* to be decided on November 24 and 26, drew 77 and 74 entries respectively, while the Wynyard Plate- and the Hauraki Plate, to be run on January 26 and 29 closed with 99 and 98'respectively.

According ,to a Melbourne Yeport, . the two-year-olds, that G. Jones has in work for Mr W. R. Kcmbail include a smart filly, who!-raii.; three furlongs from, a stand at Caulfield recently, in: 38sec.. She is Lady .Primrose, by Chief Ruler from the Night Raid mare’ Slack; Line,-; and. she is due for a trip. to•-Randwick. -where she will contest. the Gimcrack Stakes next month.',., A

Owners made'an excellent response with nominations for the Oamaru J o’ckey Club s meeting-to belheldion, September 29. , The quality, ofythe'.nominations: for the principal eyehts 7 Is shown by the inclusion of POlydora, Davolo, Ventrac, -Mobile, Silver Streak, Knockfin, Palermo,-Fracas. Dismiss, and .Waterpower being included. The response'to the hurdle race;is a bit weak,, but a: good card should be formed from the; general list of . entries.

Silver Sight, who is. engaged in. the Ashburton Handicap, carried 9.9,, and ran a good second to Scratchmere Scar, 8.0, m the Sumner Handicap. Tout le.;*Monde, shaped promisingly, jn the same race, but meets Silver Signt on 71b worse terms at Ashburton. On the third day of the National meeting • Silver; Sight, 8.0, was a fast-finishing .fourth to Sweet Agnes, 9.1, Mercian Prince 8.0, and Cleaner, 8.0. The form suggests • that Silver • Sight should run well:at Ashburton.

In reply to a request made by Mr J. Spence Nicol at the annual general meeting of the,, Wellington, Racing Club yesterday afternoon for information as to the club's'intentions with- its totalisator, the president (Mr E.:L. Riddif ord) stated that the stewards i had done, ’ and • were doing,' their best to provide patrp.ns with the most -modern facilities procurable. "As soon; as -We .have the cash you are going to have an all-electric win-and-place totalisator at Trentham,” he added, ‘ but just at this cannot be done,.; We still hope to ; be. first in the . Dominion with such‘a-machine.”

Ventfiic ' won, the Brabazon Handicap with B.l3'■from Haulbowline 8.0, and Davolo 9.4. They were-separated by a neck ahd' half a. length in Imin 27 3-ssec, with Davolo finishing the: strongest of the trio.: In the Ashburton Handicap Veatrhc meets ■ Davolo on . 1.31 b better terms over,a mile and a-quarter. .Davolo was-second in the’Wintpr Cup with 8.11; and: won' : the Islington with 9.6 in-2min ssec. • Davolo had 10.2 in ' the Heatßeote Handicap, but did not start, owing 'to the heavy going. Ventrac went sorev and did not show up in the Winter Cup or in the Heathcotc Handicap. In: hi« latest work Ventrac has .been moving nr pleasing style.

As an event the - Chelmsford Stakes dates back'to 1901, but it has had three names,'tall those: of Governors of New South .Wales. In 1901 and 1002 it was known an the Hampden flakes. 1- rom 1903 to 1608 it was the Rawson Stakes, and in 1909 it-became the Chelmsford. Since it has had its present name -New Zealand-owned winners: oC thc race have been Los Angeles (1911), tjasanof (1917), Gloaming (1918), Rapine (1923), Limerick (1926-27-28), Ammon Ra (1931). and Game Carrington (1932). Gloaming,, in 1922 and 1924. was. beaten into second place by Beauford and Heroic. Phar Lap went down, to Mollison in 1929, but won in 1930. Rogilla. was tne winner last year, and scored again this year. Shadow King’s Melbourne Cuo record of four minor placings is unlikely to be threatened for many years, unless, of course, he can improve upon it himself this year, and of the £12.552.in stake earnings £4250 has come from those Cup pl«cShadow King can claim fame. iOr he.has shared in the prize money in 10 cup races. Besides his Melbourne Cup performances. Shadow King has won one Moonec v alley Cup and been third in two others; he has won a Williamstown Cup and has been placed in a King’s Cup and « Bendigo Cup.

■ One of the largest teams at Riccarton is that* controlled by S. Barr, who had an exceptionally good innings last season, and is likely to be again well up in the winning trainers’ list. He has 12 horses at present in active commission, comprising Starshootcr, Silver Sight, Niggerhoad, Quietljv Fairway, Morepork, Colossian, First View, Cheap Money. Quebec, Some Shamble, and Capital. All o£_thede will be racing at the spring meetings. The. three-year-old Capital has recently been recommissioned after being gelded.

The necessity for running the Novice Stakes at Ashburton in two divisions arises from the fact that 28 acceptors are in a race where the safety number —at the five-furlong barrier-—is 18. The dub decided to increase the prize money, awarding £55, £lO, and £5 respectively to the placed horses in each division. Thus cither winner will not be eligible to contest the novice race at Geraldine, the Ohapi Handicap. The totalisator will be open twice, the first division of the Novice Stakes being the first race and the second division the fourth event. Another result is that the time of starting has been advanced from 12.45 to 12.30, and the last race is scheduled for 4.45 instead of 4.tio.

In the House of Commons on July 26 Captaip Heilgers (Conservative, Bury St. Edmunds) asked the Minister of Agriculture ivhether he had arrived at any decision as to the removal of the National Stud from the Irish Free State to England. Mr Elliot: "As I stated on, March 15, I do not consider the removal of the. National Stud to this country,to be practicable.” Captain Heilgers: "As this is a national institution, is there any justification for its continuance in the Irish Free State?” Mr Elliot: “There would be a very large capital outlay involved in the transfer to this country.” Major Ross (Conservative Londonderry): "Will the, Minister bear in mind that the stud may be transferred in the United Kingdom without leaving Ireland?”— (Laughter.)
