SHIPPING NOTES

LAUNCH OF THE DORSET

NEW OFFICE ARRANGEMENTS,

(From Oub uwn Correspondent.)

LONDON, August 4. Tbe new motor vessel Dorset, the second of the two vessels built to the order of the Federal Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., at Belfast, was launched from Messrs Workman Clark’s yards on July 28. The naming ceremony was performed by Mrs H. J. F. Mills, wife of the manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Mr Mills represented the owners, and with him were Captain H. Dawson and Mr A. H. Parker, the marine and engineering superintendents under whose supervision the vessel is being y constructed.

At the lunch following Mrs Mills was presented by the builders with a silver Irish bowl, and complimentary speeches were made by tbe chairman,, Messrs Workman Clark, and by Mr Mills. The Dorset is in all respects a repeat of the Durham, which was launched on June 27. She is a twin-screw vessel of the shelter deck type, has an over-all length of 613 feet and a dead-weight of over 13,500 tons. The main propelling machinery consists of two sets of Sul two-stroke cycle solid injection Diesel engines, constructed by Sulzer Brothers, Winterthur. Electricity displaces steam for all the auxiliaries both in the engine room and on the deck for cargo working, handling the ship, and cooking and heating, and is supplied by three British Atlas-Polar six-cylinder Diesel-driven generators. The refrigerating installation includes fan rooms for circulating air in the insulated holds when carrying fruit and cheese, and several compartments have been made specially gastight for the carriage of chilled meat. Accommodation is provided amidships in two large deckhouses for the officers and crew, while aft for 40 cadets large, roomy cabins, schoolroom, dining saloon, etc., have been arranged. It is expected that the Dorset will be ready for sea in October. NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY.

New arrangements in the offices of the New Zealand Shipping Company in Leadenhall street conduce to greater convenience. Hitherto Messrs J. B. Westray and Co., the shipping company’s brokers, and the officials of the shipping company have had offices in Leadenhall street together, while the Federal Company’s brokers and officials have been located in Fenchurch avenue and Billiter street. Recently the premises occupied by the Post Office next door to the shipping company have been vacated, and they have now been taken over by the shipping company. The passenger department in the rear of the building has been brought forward to the new premises. A general shuffle round is being made, and eventually Messrs Birt. Potter, and Hughes and Messrs Bethel. Gwyn, and Co,, loading brokers for the Federal Steam Navigation Company, will he housed at ISS Leadenhall street. The passenger departments of the three agents will al] be represented in the new office at the front. Thus the officials of the two shipping companies and all their brokers will be concentrated under one roof, which will obviate all the comings and goings across the street that were previously necessary.
