How an English widow has sold what is claimed as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus for less than £lO was told in the Echo de Paris recently. Christopher Columbus is believed to have been born in a dilapidated hovel a,t Calvi, Corsica, and the municipal council wished to buy the site for its historical associations. The property was owned by an elderly English widow, Mrs Baker, with whom negotiations were opened. Mrs Baker asked £95 for the house, but the municipality, on the pretext that the place threatened to fall in ruins, made an offer of £9 10s.
