PORT CHALMERS NEWS

AMERICAN BASEBALL The American game of baseball will shortly be played at Port Chalmers by members of the Byrd expedition ships, Bear of Oakland and Jacob lluppert. Captain 11. A. J. English has written to the Mayor of Port Chalmers (Mr J. Watson) asking for the use of the local recreation ground. The Mayor informed Captain English that the ground would be available on Saturday afternoons. CRICKET CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Port Chalmers Cricket Club was held last night in the Buffalo Hall, Mr D. A. W. Middleton presiding. There was a large attendance of members. Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman said the satisfactory position of the club was clue to the work carried out by the committee and members. Next season, it was hoped,. the- club would have a . credit balance instead of a debit balance. It was hoped that some members would be in a better financial position during the coming season. The club had a large number of supporters who assisted in many ways. The committee hoped that every member would do his utmost during the season, and instead of being second or third on the list, take up a leading position. The large attendance that evening augured well for the success of the season. The club hoped the Borough Council would give its support in ‘connection with making improvements to the recreation ground. The motion was seconded by Mr E. Tiffany, who agreed with the remarks made in the report in connection with the performances of the most prominent players last season, ■ Mention was made of the bad state of the floor in the pavilion! It was stated that promises had been made by the council that the floor would receive attention, but nothing had been done. Mr C. Walsh said that two years ago the council had been asked to remove a number of trees from the embankment below the cottage hospital, but nothing had been done in this direction. The trees cast a shade, and this was not to the advantage of cricketers. Cr E. C. Smith said he was of the opinion that the trees would be removed before the season commenced. He asked members of the club not to ask too much from the council this year. The council’s General Committee had recommended that all sports bodies be charged for the use of playing areas, and the Cricket Club would come under this heading. He was confident the council would carry out certain improvements to the grounds, but the hill would not be cut i away. The question of asphalting the floor of the pavilion would be given every consideration by the council, which would also supply the necessary soil for the ground. It was mentioned that the asphalting of the pavilion floor would not interfere with the members of the Football Chib, as the latter carried out training exercises outside the building. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The chairman said that cricket was becoming very popular in Port Chalmers, and thig fact undoubtedly accounted for the large attendance that evening. The secretary reported that he had forwarded n letter to Mr M. A. Noble in Australia complimenting him on the capable manner in which the description of the test matches between the Australia and Englsh teams had been broadcast. A reply had been received from Mr Noble, who intimated that it was pleasing to know that his broadcasts had been enjoyed, not only by cricketers, but also by others. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr A. E.’ Ansell, 51. P.; president, Mr D. A. W. Middleton; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. B. Wilson; auditor, Mr J. H. Crawford; trustees, Messrs N. Dodds and W. Corbett; club captain, Mr P. Braitbwailc; committcee—Messrs C. Welsh, I. Dunn, S. Davis, J. Hutton, H. Hutton, G. M'Dowell, J. Dnggic, and A.
