PALMERSTON A meeting of the committee of the Palmerston LaM’n Tennis Club was held in the Athenaeum on Tuesday night, the vice-president (Mrs C. F. Smith) presiding over a fair attendance of members. It Mas decided to invite the Bahnacewen ‘ Chib to send a team of six ladies and six men to Palmerston on Labour Day, and to notify the club that the Palmerston B team would not be able to go to Balmacewen On that day. Opening day was fixed for September 22. and full arrangements M’ere made. It M-as decided to engage a man to paint in the lines on the courts after the top-dressing M’as, completed. Messrs J. A. .lull, P. A. O’Reilly and G. AAC Thomson were elected a grounds'committee. Miss Betty'Thomas M’as elected to the vacancy on the committee caused by the resignation of Mrs R. C. Walker, who is leaving the district. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the past president (the Rev. C. Melville Newton) for his valuable services. A local resident M’ho was selling tickets in a recent art union connected with the Melbourne Centenary brought an unusual run of luck to his clients. One ticket drew a prize of 15, one brought the holder a free ticket in the next art union. This gentleman also sold the j M’inning ticket in a recent local venture. 1 WAIKOUAITI A large audience gathered in the Waikouaiti Public Hall on Wednesday evening, the occasion being the annual social of the Presbyterian Church, the minister, the Rev. T. W. Potts, presiding. In his opening address the chairman, in a brief review of the work of the church during the year, stressed the loss which had occurred through the death of a number of members, several of whom had had a lifelong connection with the Presbyterian Church in Waikouaiti and district. The Rev. A, AVatson, of the Mornington Presbyterian Church, was the chief speaker, the main point of his address being the need of prayer in church life. This subject Mr Watson illustrated by anecdotes, not all of a serious character. Other speakers were the Rev. C. AV. Foreman (Anglican) and the Rev. J. Thomas (Methodist). The following programme of entertainment . was presented: Pianoforte duet, Misses Townsend and Nind; song, Mr lyffe; song, Mrs Townsend: ’cello solo, Miss Rush (Dunedin); Scottish story, the Rev. A. AVatson; song, Master M'Millan (Seacliff) ; recitation, Miss Moody (Palmerston); song, Miss M‘Lay (Dunedin); song, Hr Clark (Dunedin). A well-shaped long red mangel grown by Mr . A. R. RANFURLY The Ranfurly Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot on Monday night, about 30 members attending. The shooting was of a very high average and the indications are that the club will be a very strong one next season. This was the second shoot for the . Messrs Swinnard Bros, trophy, the conditions of this trophy being the best three of four shoots including handicap. The button for the best shoot off the rifle w-as won by J. D. Cromb and the handicap button by J. E. Kearney. The following were the best scores returned: —J. D. Cromb 79, J. L. Kearney 79,'AV. Aitken 78. F. Morns 78. H. Laing 78, A. Macdonald 78, B. LAWRENCE The annual meeting of the Lawrence Cricket Club was held on Monday evening, Mr R. F. Batchelor presiding over an attendance of 20 members. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: — Patron, Mr J. K. Simpson; president, Mr G. R. Talboys; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr S. Mong; General Committee—■ Messrs E. Winchester, R. F. It was decided to endeavour to form a South Tuapeka Cricket Association, and a committee was appointed to interview Beaumont, Waitahuna, and Tuapeka Mouth in reference to the matter. QUEENSTOWN On Monday morning an exceedingly cold snap was experienced in the district. For three or four hours after daylight came in there was a .snowstorm, which maMe" visibility difficult for traffic. Parts of Crown'Terrace were covered to a depth of six inches and on the Skipper’s Saddle it piled'up to three feet. Lorries requiring to use this road were held up ■ until the county gang cleared a passage. This is the' third occasion on which it has been found necessary to send the men out on such a mission during this season. The average rainfall of .August is 231 points on eight days; this year s total is 418 points on 14 days, which indicates that the weather was unusually wet. The sunshine for the mouth (115.8 hours) was slightly below the average (118 hours), and 7.2 hours less, than in August last year (123 hours)'. The Arthur Bell Cup, shot for annually by the Wakatipu Gun Club, has been won this year by Mr Ernest Bremner, who, on 11 yards, with five breaks, registered 21. Other competitors were George Cockburn (11 yards, with four breaks in), 20; T. Robertson (11 yards, with five breaks in), 19; J. Edgar (11 yards, with two breaks in), 19; C. S. Elms (18 yards)., 19; J. M'Mullan (11 yards, with three breaks in), 18. . Owing to the unfavourable weather conditions prevailing on Saturday no. matches were played on the golf links. The report of Mr Ellis, Central Otago Power Board engineer, on the Queenstown Borough power plant and reticulation, based on an inspection made at the end of May last, has now been received by the council. It is in the bauds of the Electric Lighting Committee for perusal ; and will later be submitted to a special meeting of the council. Arbor Day lias been fixed for September 19 in Queenstown. During the past winter the local Borough Council has provided work during the stand-down week for unemployed men who are not engaged in the. mining scheme. The council has decided to extend this measure of relief to the men for one more week, during which they will be engaged on tree planting. At a recent meeting of the Citizens Relief Committee occasion was taken by the chairman (the Rev, AA I . AA. Powell) to express appreciation of the services rendered bv two of the members, the Rev. J. S. and Mrs Murray, who are about to

leave for Wellington. Mr Powell referred to the fact that their advice and practical help had been of great value to the committee. The local Catholic Presbytery on the Eastern Terrace is to be removed by the end of the present month to make way for a fine modern two-storeyed building. Something over £IOOO was raised for the new structure a few years ago, and efforts arc now being made to raise the balance necessary. , ■ At, the annual meeting of the Wakatipu Defence Rifle Club the following officebearers were elected: —Patron, Lieutenant J. It was resolved that the Breweries Cup Match be held at Garston on Labour Day. It was resolved that as the Cromwell section of the club had expressed a wish to form a club of their own no obstacle be placed in the way. Mr and Mrs Roy Fraser, of Woodlands, are taking up residence in Queenstown. Mrs D. Jardine, Kawarau Falls Station, and her son, Mr G. Jardine, are visiting Dunedin. Mr and Mrs E. V. Scandrctt returned on Saturday from a short visit to Dunedin. Mr Eric Binney, Dunedin, spent the week-end in Queenstown. Miss Salinger, Dunedin, was in Queenstown during the week. Miss Molly Simson left Queenstown on Friday on' a holiday visit to relations in Timaru and Christchurch. Mr H. C. Lorden has returned to the charge of a mining concern in the Shotover after spending the winter months at his home in Dunedin. Mr and • Mrs W. T. Sinellie, Green Island, are among present visitors to Queenstown. The Rev. Father Gavin and Father M’Mahon have been in Queenstown for the past few days. The latter is giving a course of religious instruction at ot. Joseph’s Church. Mr H. Tomkies returned to Queenstown on Saturday after spending a fortnight in Dunedin and Invercargill. ALEXANDRA The annual meeting of the AlexandraClyde Presbyterian Church was held m the Jubilee Hall, Alexandra, on Tuesday evening, when a good attendance was presided over by Mr A. Ashworth. Mr A. Ashworth (session clerk) presented the session report, which, showed that at June 30 the number on the roll was 158. Five new members were added to the roll, three by transfer from other churches and two by profession of faith. Transfers from the parish to other churches numbered seven. There were five deaths, two baptisms, and six weddings during the year. The number attending communion during the period under review was 247. The minister and his wife were commended in the report for their faithful and untiring efforts on behalf of the work in the parish. The secretary (Mr J. S. Lees) submitlted the report on behalf of the Management Committee. Improvements had been carried out in the church property. A new concrete and cyclone fence had been erected in front of the manse and Jubilee Hall. Finance was a serious problem, and the managers urged for continual co-operation , from parishioners. The balance sheet, which was presented by the secretary (Mr T, A. Mahoney), showed the income to be £435 9s Bd. Ihe treasurer also paid a tribute to the work accomplished by the Ladies’ Guild for the, church, a sum of over £33 being handed to the church funds from this source, also £5 from the Clyde Ladies’ Club. The various reports regarding the work carried out in the Sunday schools, Bible classes, P.W.M.U,, the Ladies’ Club and Ladies’ Guild were presented and showed that progress had been made during the year. Before closing, the chairman moved a comprehensive vote .of' thanks To all workers, and Mr J, Smart (Clyde) moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Rev. and Mrs W. J. Bevis for the excellent work they were carrying out. Following the formal business, a pleasant social hour w r as spent. The choir rendered an, anthem; vocal solos by Miss hi. D. Ramsay and Messrs W. B. Willsteed and R. S. Kinnaird; duet by Messrs D. W. M. Moorhead and J. B. Arnott; pianoforte solos by Mrs R. 6. Simpson and Mrs F. R. Bould; and a monologue by Mr. F. R. Bould. The accompanists were Mrs T. A. Mahoney and Mrs H. W. Beilby. ' 1
