PUBLIC NUISANCES

TO THE ’EDITOR Sir, —As a resident of Roslyn I wish to endorse the comments of your correspondent who complained of the crowing of roosters in the early hours of the morning. At 2.45 this morning a rooster residing near the fire brigade station commenced his warbling, resulting in an answering call from a rooster in the vicinity of the post office. Although the serenading was of short duration the awakening of light sleepers had been effected, and thereafter, to me at least, sleep was impossible. Surely our councillors could do something to regulate this and similar public nuisances. In Sydney strict action is being taken regarding the crowing of roosters in residential areas, and London authorities are prohibiting the use of motor horns during sleeping hours, and are endeavouring to lessen noises generally. Recently I was in King street at 10 p.m. when a motor cycle, followed by a ear, passed the Hospital without lessening speed or noise in the slightest degree. It is a standing disgrace to onr councillors that they have not ere this prohibited traffic past the Hospital during sleeping hours. Man's inhumanity to man is at times incomprehensible. Maybe, however, our civic authorities will now follow the lead of London and\ Sydney, and endeavour to rid the town of unnecessary noises during sleeping hours. —I am, etc., August 27. ROSLTN.
