PURAKANUI PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Tiie seventy-first annual meeting of the Purakanui Presbyterian Church was held on August 23, the Rev. G. Dunn, moderator of the charge, presiding over a large attendance of members and adherents.

Mr L. J. Neilson submitted the annual report, and Mr G. Calder the balance sheet, which showed a small credit balance after eight months (the financial year being altered to the end of. June). The year's operations fulfilled the budget’s requirements. The reports of the Purakanui and Deborah Bay branches of the P.W.M.I'. were received, and showed that excellent work was carried out by these branches in assisting missions and the church generally. The Bible .class leaders were congratulated on their work and assistance to missions.

This being the first annual meeting since Mr G. Calder's appointment as the new missionary student, he thanked all for the welcome given to Mrs Calder and himself since coining to Purakanni, and also for the support given by the congregations at the various services. There were still many, however, who did not attend. Mr Calder spoke in appreciation of the loyalty of the Management Committee and Sunday school teachers. Mr J. Miller, representing the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church, congratulated the Purakanni church on the healthy balance sheet and the favourable reports of the various branches. They were aware of the hard times the district was passing through. Purakanui had a minister for only a short period and then came the break, and it spoke well for the loyally of the congregation to the minister and the minister to the congregation.

Mr John Watson also offered congratulations on the ending of another, financial year, and to the officers. Mr Calder, he said, was having a happy term with his congregation. The Rev. Mr Dunn referred to the various reports and to the commencement of a communion service at Deborah Day. He said it was felt that the service was one of the brightest yet held. Ho also referred to the formation of a Bible class at, Purakanni and a Busy Bee branch. It was thought that these movements would be.used by God to help in His missions.

The following were elected to the Ma»* ageraent Committee Messrs D. M‘Lacblan. X M'Lachlau, D. Young, H. MTlafiic, and D. M'Calman. The Port Chalmers Presbyterian Choir, under the baton of Mr G. P. Miramar rendered a pleasant musical programme The soloists were Mrs Elliott, Misses % MTherson, I. Farquharson, Messrs - ft. Smillie, and t. X Neilson.
