CHARGE OF ASSAULT
MAORI YOUTH BEFORE COURT ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Peb United Pbkss Association.) THAMES, August 2». Rakei (Jimmy) Ake. aged 26 years, was committed for trial at Auckland by the magistrate (Mr F. W. Platts) on a charge of assault with intent to commit a serious offence on a widow, aged 77. on the evening of August 1.1. Hearing of the evidence occupied all yesterday afternoon. A doctor and the police gave evidence that the accused was in a drunken stupor shortly after his arrest, and did not remember anything that had happened. Counsel for the defence (Mr G. J. Garland) made application to reduce the charge to common assault, but the magistrate said he thought the court had no power to do so on such a serious charge. The accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for trial, the magistrate reserving his decision with' respect to bail for a fortnight, during which Ake will be held in custody at Thames.
