FARMING AT MIDDLEMARCH

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —It is not my intention to enter into a lengthy correspondence with your correspondent “Judge Not ’ in regard to my adverse comments regarding the condition of the cattle offered, but not sold, at the Middlemarch sale. I can safely leave it to those who were present. Neither have I any intention of questioning his ability as a judge of the condition of the cattle. I would like, however, to pass on to * Judge Not for his careful consideration the words ot our Governor-Genreal when speaking to the farmers at Palmerston last week with reference to the quality of our produce: “ Smug complacency and self-satisfaction in such matters were fatal, and were more than sufficient to ruin both town and country.” But why this tirade from your correspondent about the returned soldiers? I am sorry I have irritated “ Judge Not ” bv the awkward manner in which I referred to Mr Cottrell and his success in connection with his poultry farm, but I strongly resent the suggested attempt to read into my reference any reflection on the returned soldiers on the settlements of Gladbrook and Poplar Grove, for all of whom I have and always have had the highest regard, and I am exceedingly gratified to have from

your correspondent assurance that “ they have won the battle for the second time. Distasteful as it apparently is to .Judge Not," the fact remains that Mr B. Cottrell, of the Gladbrook Poultry .barm, has this year won the utility Ormnston Challenge Shield presented by the UtilityPoultry Club of New Zealand, which I, certainly think is worthy of recognition. —I am, etc., _ Middlbmabch Correspondent.
