UNAUTHORISED LOTTERY
TROTTING CLUB FINED (Per United Press Association.) WANGANUI, August 27. The Wanganui Trotting Club _ was charged with being a partner in a scheme in July last by which prizes aggregating £47 10s were gained by a mode of chance, and was fined £lO by the magistrate, Mr J. S. Salmon. B. Kench, who assisted in the scheme, was fined £5. It was explained by Detective Walsh that in July some supporters of the club decided to establish a scheme to liquidate the club’s debts. No one except the club benefited from the scheme. Mr F. K. Turnbull said that the club made a loss over its last two days’ meeting of £95, and did not apply for a permit for an art union, as it was anxious to go ahead and .endeavour to pay off some of its debts. It thought that delay might take place over the permit. Tickets were distributed to trotting enthusiasts in various parts of the Dominion.
