Ministerial The Minister of Public Works (Mr J Bitehener) joined the north-bound express at Studholme yesterday, en route to Wellington. Mr F. Waite, M.L.C., left yesterday for Wellington. Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., whs a passenger by yesterday’s express, en route for Wellington. Mr R. B. Tennent left by the express for the north yesterday, en routs for Wellington. Bishop Fitchett returned to Dunedin yesterday morning after an extended tour of the Southland diocese.

Sir Walter Herrick, secretary of the United Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association of' New Zealand, was a passenger for Christchurch by yesterday’s express. Mr C. T. Aschman has been re-elected chairman of the Canterbury University College Council. Messrs R. Kinnaird, F. G. Duncan, J. Kringans, and A. Ashworth left yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation. Mr T. G. Fox was elected president of the Christchurch Centre of the New Zealand Bowling Association at the annual meeting on Monday evening. Mr C. E. R. Webber will leave this week by the Wanganella for Melbourne, where he will be the guest of Lieutenantcommander Harris, R.A.N. He will proceed later to Adelaide. Perth, and Northern Queensland. Mr G. M’Namara, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, will return to Wellington by the Maungahui next Monday from Sydney. Mr M’Namara attended the Postal Congress in Cairo early this year, and has spent some time in London on departmental business. At the first lecture of the 1934 series held on Monday under the auspices of the Insurance Institute and Officers’ Guild, opportunity was taken to present diplomas entitling the holders to the degree of associate to the following:— Messrs H. V. Lawry. L. E. Bullock, E. G. James, S. V. Wilson, G. G. Slater, L. A. Gilbertson, and H. 0. Matheeon.

A Wellington Press Association message states that the Rev. E. M. M'Levie, at present curate o£ St. Matthew’s, Masterton, has been appointed vicar of Roseneath, Wellington, in succession to the Ven. Archdeacon Innes-Jones. The latter has been 50 years in the ministry, and will retire after celebrating the jubilee of his ordination on St. Luke’s Pay, October 18. He intends to retire to Blenheim.

The resignation of Dr C. E. Beeby, acting-professor of philosophy, was accepted as from December 31 next at the meeting of the Canterbury University College Council on Monday. The council extended its hearty congratulations to Dr Beeby on his appointment as executive officer to the New Zealand Council for Educational Research. The chairman (Mr C. T. Aschman) said that Dr Beeby had been a particularly valuable member of the staff, and had done excellent work for the college. After a holiday visit to Invercargill, Mr J. J. Wilson, who recently relinquished the position of sub-editor of the New Zealand Tablet, passed through Dunedin yesterday en route to Auckland, where he will take up an appointment in literary and research work in connection with the celebration of the centenary of the Catholic Church in New Zealand in 1938.
