A DANGEROUS ROAD

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —If there is one section of the community more hardly done by than any other I would venture to say that it comprises the motor cyclists. I reside at the top of Baldwin street, North-East Valley, which is probably the steepest street in Dunedin and environs, and it is necessary for me to ride a motor cycle up ond down this street almost daily. This would be no hardship if the road were in reasonable order, but it is surfaced with loose metal of all sizes, which offers little resistance to a two-wheeled vehicle, and it is not unusual for me to make at least a portion of the down hill trip crab fashion. Recently I made a request that some binding should be mixed with this metal, but was informed by the authorities that the present surface is better for trucks. Truck drivers with whom I have spoken fail to agree with the authorities. Now, Sir, a truck makes a trip up this street at most six times a year, while I use it daily. I pointed this fact out to the authorities, who informed me bluntly that the truck was considered of more importance than I. If this is the altitude taken by the city fathers I for one am something more than disgusted. My family has been living in this street for a long period (over 40 years), and unless I am greatly mistaken has paid more than any other resident in the street in rates, yet apparently no consideration is to be allowed on that or any other score. I would be grateful for the opportunity of carrying a city councillor up _ and down this street just once as a pillion passenger. That might serve to bring home to him the dangers lying in wait behind each stone of metalling on the road.—l am, etc., A. H. F. Stiix. Baldwin street, July 31.
