DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB

SOCIAL EVENING There was a large attendance of members of the Dunedin Gardening Club and their friends at a social evening held by the club at the Y.M.C.A. last evening. The president (Mr P. H. Hollingworth) occupied the chair, and briefly extended a welcome to all. This meeting of the club, he said, was something of a departure from the club’s usual programme. It was the custom for the 'members to meet once a fortnight and listen to an instructive talk. Ho hoped this opportunity for them to gather in « social manner would result in an increase in the popularity of the club. Mr J. Passmore gave a brief address on the history of the club. At one time, ho said, there were in Dunedin a Rose Club, a Chrysanthemum Club, and other minor organisations. It was eventually decided to form all of them into a gardening club. Mr Hollingworth was appointed president, an office which be had held ever since. It was not long afterwards that Mr P. Nelson became secretary, and he had been in that office till now. The club had been singularly fortunate in these officers. He went on to speak of Mr Hollingworth’s long experience and the outstanding work of the secretary in arranging the lectures which were given every fortnight. On behalf I of the members he presented a pair of military hair brushes (o Mr Hollins* | worth and a similar gift to Mr Nelson, both of whom returned thanks. An enjoyable programme was presented, the principal item being nn amusing sketch entitled " Flossie," which was capably presented by members of the Smilers’ Club. Other items were provided by Mr J.
