ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT

FARMERS’ UNION OTEKAIKE AND UPPER WAITAKI BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Otekaiko and Upper Waitaki branch of the Farmers’ Union was held at Otiake, there being a good representation from the surrounding districts. Mr W. MTCay occupied the chair. Mr G. Grant? reported that, with the president, he had studied the proposed alterations to the rules which were considered satisfactory, and it was decided to approve of these. The flooding of the New Zealand markets with cheap Japanese goods came up for discussion, several speakers considering that steps should be taken to exclude these undesirable imports Other speakers thought that this was a matter for the Government to consider, and that the best way out of the difficulty was for all to buy New Zealand and British-made goods which were also superior in every way. The proposal of the Oamaru Harbour Board to expend the sum of £37,000 on the breakwater extension was condemned by several speakers. It was considered that the proposed expenditure would not result in greatly increased revenue to the port in view of the approaching centralisation of shipping. Members were of the opinion that the port should be maintained in its present condition, as it was apparently capable of catering for all the trade offering, and that surplus funds should be used to relieve the hardpressed ratepayers. The following resolution was carried unanimously:—“Considering the present great indebtedness of the Oamaru Harbour Board, amounting to £215,000, and the menace of centralised shipping (which means that only small coastal vessels will visit such ports as Oamaru), this meeting is of the opinion that a further expenditure of £37,000, as proposed by the board, is unjustifiable.” Messrs-Grant and MTCenzie were appointed to represent the branch at the next meeting of the North,;Utago iEsecii* tive.
