UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETY

A' criticism levelled at musical societies is that their repertories are often confined to a, few well-known and frequently-performed works. The University Musical Society is to be congratulated that it has included in its programme two works, Hoist's "King Estmere" and Bach's B Minor Suite for flute and strings, which have not been previously heard in Dunedin. " King' Estmere " is a choral ballad for chorus and orchestra based on the tale of an old English lengendary monarch, and the composer has written music which has a lilt and freshness that has caught the atmosphere of the verse. This work, interpreted by a choir of 100 young voices, and accompanied by a picked orchestra, is sure to make an immediate appeal to all those who attend the concert in the Town Ifdll Concert Chamber on Saturday.

The Bach suite is a collection of eighteenth century dances, commencing with an overture. Mr L. Rothwell will play the flute part and will be supported by an efficient orchestra of strings. The programme, which is under the direction of Dr V. E. Galway, will also include Mozart's E flat concerto, with Miss Mama Service as solo pianist, a violin solo bv Miss Ethel Wallace, a vocal solo by Mr N. F. Sansoni, and two choruses, " The Spinning Chorus" by Wagner, for the ladies of the choir, and Handel's " The Lord is a Man of War," for the men.

The box plan arrangements are advertised.
