A WIN FOR THE VISITORS The annual Rugby footbal] match between Christ's College and Otago Boys' High School was played yesterday afternoon .at Carisbrook, the visiting, team *-winning a fairly evenly contested, game by 10 points to 5. Play was fast, but on account of the solid defence of both sides, there was an absence of any spectacular feature, and for the greater part of the game it was left to the opposing sets of forwards to contest issue. The visitiug forwards took the ball through nearly to the' Otago twenty-five, but from a scrum, Scott sent hia backs away, and the ball went to Johnstone who gained a fair ulice of ground for his side with a long line-finder. . From the line out Hay broke kKay and. passed to Harpur, whose -punt through was'weil fielded by Edwards, and returned' to halfway. A solid sortie by the. home pack carried play. inside the College twenty-five. Ormond put his side oii attack with a kick that found the line near halfway, and the visiting backs opened up passing that took the ball to the'*Otago tweiity-five. A determined dash for the line by. Holderness saw play carried on almost to the Otago line; but Edwards relieved with a long kick. A eood run by Mahony increased the advantage, and the forwards came into the picture to dribble through to the College ,quarter-line. Mahony joined in and gained another few yards, and Forrester, coming through fMt,-dribbled through to within a. few yards of the line, picked up and went over. Mahony converted. Boys' High School 5, Christ's College nil. Masofield led the College pack in a determined sortie that penetrated deep into Otago territory, Crisp further increasing the advantage with a line kick to the twentyfive. From the line out Ormond secured and broke through to within striking distance before passing to Hay, who made a bold bid for the line, only to be well taken by. Edwards when a few yards out. The College kept up the pressure and Harper dribbled over, but Hardy got to the ball first and succeeded iu forcing. Play ■ swung back to halfway, where the College backs came into'action. The ball went from Crisp to Ormond, to Harpur, Mho put in a good spurt down the wing bei'ore„being .thrown out at the twentyfive. The home pack paved the way for a neat movement among the backs, and the ball went to Hardy, who attempted to centre but miskicked. The College backs were getting plenty of the ball, but they were failing to link up, and the majority of their movements broke down almost in their inception. Alexander put College on the. attack with a good kick to halfway, and „;agaiii the backs came into the pictured Holderness sent a long kick to the twenty-five, .where, from a scramble, . Harpur sent to O rn, °nd, to Holderness, who. ran through the defence to score near the posts. Alexander brought the scores level with a good kick. The visitors kept up the pressure, and Holderness was again nearly over, but he dropped the half'and Edwards was able to clear. The best combined movement seen so far resulted iii play travelling back to the home line. For the next minutes High School were hard put to it to keep their line intact,,, and from a scramble Crisp cleared' to Byrne, who broke through almost, to the line,"/ He dropped the ball just.as he was, about, to. ground it, .but -Xewtoacame {lAough. \ picked ■! lip, aud : \ dived • across. Alexander .converted, and half time was called with-the scores: Christ's College 10, Boys' High School 5. ~ At the commencement' of the second spell the High School forwards set up a solid offensive, and Mahony put his side in a good position with a well-judged line kick to-the corner. .Play swung back to the twenty-five, but the home pack came again,' and short-passing between Knox and Little, resulted in the latter. nearly going over at the. corner. High School kept up the pressure," and the backs opened up passing in front of the College goal, but Holderness intercepted cleverly and got nearly to halfway before he was brought down. Edwards returned to -the twenty-five, where Chapman had an unsuccessful shot from a penalty. Harpur broke away and made a good run almost to halfway, but he was unsupported and Johnstone nullified the advantage with a kick that found the line near the College twenty-five. From the line out Crisp sent to Ormond, to Holderness, who cut through and sent Harpur away down the line. Hay, who was following up fast, took Harpur's pass and battled his way to the twenty-five, Edwards clearing. M'Kenzie and Chapman led the Otago pack in a solid rush that drove the visitors back inside ..their own twenty-five, but Holderness picked up and got almost to halfway before he was tackled. Following up his effort the forwards took the ball at their toes and carried on to the twenty-five, but Geary- broke into the rush and dribbled solo back to midfield. The home forwards were working well together,, and gradually they worked their way back to r. the visitors' twenty-five, where play remained for a time. Thrpe times in quick succession the ball went to the backs, but the College defence was sound, and the movements gained very little ground. A dashing counter-attack by the College vanguard transferred play to well past halfway, but Otago rallied and regained the lost ground. For the next five minutes the home team had all the advantage territorially, but. although attack after attack was launched, these were broken up by the stern defence of the visitors. Harpur changed the gcene of play with a break away and a long kick downfield, and the pack attempted to drive home the advantage. Drivine right down to the High School line they kept up a solid pressure, and for a time the home line was subjectedto a continual batt-ring. In quick succession Holderness and Harper were nearly over, and relief came when Geary broke through and dribbled to past halfway. At this stage Holderness retired injured and was replaced by Jameson. Play was even for a time, but a minute before th? end of the spell Harpur put in another, sprint down the wing, and the visitors were on the attack when the whistle went, with the fipal. scores: Christ's College 10 poiuts.
