' A man whose name was ordered to be suppressed in the meantime pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing 14s 6d in money. He. was represented by Mr C. J. L.. White, who said that tho accused had come' to him that morning and said that " the police were after him." Counsel had advised the accused to -give himself up and'he had'done so. Counsel asked for a remand to enable him to go into the, facts. The case'would be defended.^—The accused was remanded to August 10, bail being allowed on, his own ', recognisance of £25. • ■ . '.Howard Lawson, for ■ wbom Mr ''Oil J. , Calvert appeared, was charged with stealing a sheepskin' coat, a pair' oi'iSi-' ing,. boots, a vest and other articles' of clothing of a total value of £5, the property of the Byrd Expedition.—The a|c-. cused elected to be- tried by jury; ari«l was remanded till Augiist 10; bail being, allowed on his own'recognisance, of £SO and one surety of £56,'.' . '\. ;. VALUELESS CHEQUES. ' j-./ Robert Thomas Roberts,' alias Robert William Roberts* alias 'William Robinson, alias William Mason, appeared on four charges of obtaining money and goods by means of valueless cheques. The charges concerned the obtaining of gqids and money to the value of £5 from William Henry Hobbs, goods and money to the value of £5 from James Alfred Nielson, goods and money to the value of £2 from Thomas George M'Cracken, goods and money to the value of £lO from J. and J. Arthur, Ltd.—The accused pleaded guilty to all four charges.—Chief Detective Young detailed the circumstances of the offences.—On each of the charges of obtaining goods and money from Hobbs and J. and J. Arthur the accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, the sentences to be cumulative,, and on the other two charges he was convicted and discharged.—Chief Detective Young said that certain goods were found to be in good order and he asked that an order should be made for their return to the owners.—An order was accordingly made. MAINTENANCE. William James Buller Downes was charged with default of maintenance, the arrears to June 22 being £134 7s 9d.— The case was adjourned and a warrant issued for his arrest. Raymond Frank O'Brien, for whom Mr O. 0. Stevens appeared, was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears to March 19 last being £9 12s 6d. Mr .7. C. W. Robertson < appeared for the complainant.—After hearing evidence, the magistrate stood ( the case down to enable further evi- i dence to be procured. ;
