TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel.

Two light-harness races figure in the Otago Hunt Club’s programme for September 1.

The Jack Pott* colt Gambia completely outclassed the opposition he met at Timaru. He began well enough, but then ran out at the turn and tangled up a bit. He had no difficulty in retrieving the lost ground and had the race won at the home turn. From that on he jogged home in front of the field. With more experience Gamble promises to develop into a good three-year-old.

Explosion, who was recently leased by J. J. Kennerley from hia owner, Mrs C. M'Gregor, has been placed in work at Addington and is entered for events to be decided at the Hew Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting next month. Explosion is a very solid trotter and a sound stayer, and with the tighter classes prevailing in the south may have prospects in his early engagements. Gold Jacket, twice winner of the Auckland Trotting Cup, won the Flying Hanclicap, one mile, at Ascot (Victoria) recently and registered 2min 14fsee. The track' was verv heavy and Gold Jackets time was splendid under the prevailing

conditions. According to the same paper Walk Walla will not be a starter at the Centenary meetings to be held in Melbourne this year and the crack Australian pacer is to be retired.to the stud.

The big track at Addington was available for training on Friday. It was soft and not many horses were sent along fast. Ironside was given a mile in 2min 29scc. Garner took. smin 9sec for two miles, but did. it easily. Royal Crescent registered 3min SBsec for a mile, and a-half, a good performance. Stanley T. and John Jinks, did a mile and a-half in 3min 36 2-ssec. Belinda and Colonel Boy joining in for the last mile , and aquarter, which occupied 2miu 56sec, with the four horses finishing in a bunch. Somerby and Vesuvius went well while pacing a mile and a-quarter, in 2min 55 4-ssec. Provided the weather is favourable, there should be some good work this week. , ' ‘

The Auckland gelding, Rodney, lias promised to win one of the. novice trots for some time now, but in his races this season has failed to open-his winning account. He has displayed a good turn of speed in his. engagements, but his failure to trot solidly has often militated against his prospects. At the . Auckland meeting he was very unlucky to be beaten by Ganton, being only defeated by a neck after losing a.couple of lengths about two furlongs from home through breaking. Young Rodney is now being trained by J. T. Paul at Mangere, and he , may ~be found redeeming himself at the Auckland fixture next month.
