BALCLUTHA The South Otago primary schools held a field day at Balclutha on Saturday under the auspices of the Schools Sports Association. The weather was fine and the tournament proved a great success, being, as usual, well organised. In the football series the results were:—First round: Kaitangata A 15, Hillend nil; Clinton 3J, Stirling 3; Clutha A 9, Tuapeka Mouth nil; Milton 9, Kaitangata B nil. Second round: Kaitangata A 12, Clinton nil; Clutha A 6, Milton nil; Stirling 6, Hillend nil; Tuapeka Mouth 14, Clutha B nil. Third round: Tuapeka Mouth 14, Clinton 5; Milton 8, Stirling 3; Kaitangata B 3, Clutha B 3. Semifinals: Kaitangata $A 25, Milton nil; Clutha A 9, Tuapeka Mouth nil. Final: Kaitangata A 3, Clutha A nil. The girls’ basketball series resulted: —Section A: Round I—Kaitangatal—Kaitangata A 1, Clutha B I, Stirling 7, Hillend nil. Play off—Clinton 2, Clutha 1. Section winner—Clinton Pinal—Clinton 7, Kaitangata A nil. A good crowd witnessed the match between Clutha I and Star on the Show Ground. Playing with some wind behind them in the first spell, the Reds were very aggressive, and it was not long before the Greens were penalised, and from the resultant free kick Moffat kicked a goal. Henderson, who was playing centre threequarter (with Cruickshanks in the forwards), took the ball to the Green line, where in scrambling play the Greens were again penalised and Moffat kicked another goal. Clutha 6, Star nil. The Greens were trying to make a forward game of it, and in this were partly successful. However, Warburton (Clutha half) initiated a passing rush in which the ball travelled from Guest to Gold, who ran over after a dashing run, but Wilson’s kick missed. Guest later initiated a passing rush, sent the ball to Bowcott, who transferred to Dawson and the latter scored. Moffat kicked a goal. Clutha 14, Star nil. In the second spell Botting replaced Brown oh the Star side, and later Milne (Clutha) retired and I. Stewart replaced him. Cruickshanks dribbled the ball to Greens’ line and scored close to the goal. Moffat converted. Clutha 19, Star nil. Star was not done, however, and in the last 20 minutes attacked strongly, and G. Barron kicked a penalty goal, but there was no other score, the game ending with Clutha victorious by 19 points to 3. Mr Watson, of Kaitangata, was the referee. There was an attendance of over 40 at the monthly meeting of the Clutna branch of the Fanners’ Union. Mr A" G n Christie was in the chair. Among those present were members of the Womens Division. Mr Blomfield addressed the meeting on the benefits of co-opei atiou amongst farmers, as practised in Denmark and elsewhere. He also stressed the need for farmers in these days to aim at high quality in production. Strong efforts were being made to get young farmers’ clubs started everywhere in the province, and he felt sure that there was room for more than one such club m South Otago, and suggested Stirling, Balclutha, and Warepa as suitable centres. At a short meeting of the branch that followed it was decided to plant trees at the High School on Wednesday nest. Messrs Jensen, A. Anderson, and J. Johnston were deputed to attend a meeting to be held at Stirling on August Ifa lor the purpose of forming a young farmeis club there.
