LETTERS BY ROCKET
FIRST ATTEMPT A FAILURE LONDON, July 28. (Received July 29, at 8 p.m.) Gerhard Zucker’s attempt to despatch mails by rocket between two islands off the Scottish coast failed. Zucker pressed the electric firing switch but instead of the rocket soaring half a mile to Harris, there was a dull explosion and the wooden apparatus collapsed. When the smoke cleared away the rocket was lying on the sand ripped open, and the letters, among which were several addressed to his Majesty the King and the Prince of Wales and members of the Cabinet, were badly scorched. Another attempt will be made on July 30.
