MAXWELL CUP COMPETITION CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ EASY WIN The Otago Rugby League’s games were continued on Saturday, when the Maxwell Cup competition was commenced. Christian Brothers and Pacific met on the Oval, and the Brothers had little difficulty in winning by 22 points to nil. The game between City and Athletic, played at Chisholm Park, was very even, City winning by 10 points to 14 points. | CITY v. ATHLETIC The teams were:— City.—Hayden, N. Barbara, Morrison, Luskie, Milligan. Bartholomew, Cinders, F. Woodhouse, W. Brown, F. Barbara, J. Amos, Watcrsou, 0. Hopcraft. Athletic. —S. Cullen, M'Donald, Harwood, Aitchison, M'Gec, Lawless, Munro, F. Culling. Stewart, Harbourne, Gray, Gardiner, A. Barbara. Play was mostly confined to the forwards of both sides in the opening stages, with City on the defence. The City backs then broke away in fast passing, and N. Barbara, taking the ball at halfway, went down the line to score at the corner. He failed with the. kick. Athletic made a strong attack which removed play to City’s territory. A few minutes later Aitchison. intercepted a pass at halfway and, after a strong run, passed to his supports, Gardiner sending A. Barbara over, M'Donald failed with the kick. A fine movement by the Athletic backs immediately afterwards beat the opposition, and Aitchison sent Gray over for a splendid try, which M'Donald converted, giving Athletic the lead. City had a turn at attack, but Athletic quickly returned play to the other end. and Harbourne pushed his way over, M'Donald failing with the kick. Play was in mid-field when half time was called. Athletic II points, City 3 points. City pressed after the resumption‘and Athletic’s line was soon threatened. From a scrum in Athletic’s territory the ball went out to Waterson, who fell over the line, but lost possession. The City backs again broke away, and Ginders went over for a- try, which N. Barbara converted. City launched another strong attack immediately afterwards and Milligan scored; The try was not converted. Harwood broke- away almost to City’s line, and Grav, following up fast, picked up and scored. City .again came through, the backs handling in fine style. The ball went out to N. Barbara from a scrum near the line, and he scored a good try, to which he added the,extra points. In the last few minutes Amos scored for City, and the game ended:— ' City 19 points. O’Connor went over for a try, which B. O’Connor failed to convert. Pacific worked through to the* opposing twenty-five, where Reid saved. A few minutes later the Greens attacked, and,-a long pass was sent out by T. O’Connor to Woodhouse, who scored. B O'Connor missed with the kick. The Pacific backs then carried play to the Brothers’ line,- but it quickly returned, and T. O’Connor again scored for the Greens, Schmelz failing with the kick. A fine passing rush by the Brothers ended in J. O’Connor scoring. Half time score: Christian Brothers 12 points, Pacific nil. Shortly after the resumption the Green backs came into action, and good passing by Reekie and Schmelz removed play almost to Pacific’s line. Aston secured possession, and went over for a try, which Pollock converted, A strong kick by Foote gave Pacific relief, and MTndoe gained ground with a solo dribblingrush. A few minutes later Culling sent Woodhouse and Brosnan away, the latter being well tackled by J. Blackwood near the line. Pacific again attacked, but the Green backs carried play almost the length of the field, and Woodhouse lost a try by holding on too long. The Brothers retained the upper hand,, and just before the close Schmelz scored under the posts. Woodhouse added the extra points. The final ,score was; Christian Brothers .. 22 points.
