The inspector (Mr T. Lang) submitted the following report on the work done iu the county during the month: — Hawkesbury Riding.—Very little has been done on the gravelling contract on the road to Mount Trotter, as the wet weather has made the road impassable. About 150 yards of rotten rock have been quarried and carted out to repair Quarry road, and nine yards of Shag River gravel have been put on Payne’s road. Mount Watkins road is now being surfaced. The road to Buckland s crossing will require a considerable quantity of gravel in the summer, but about 40 yards will do the worst portions at present as river gravel is bard to get just now. The bridge at the crossing is being renovated. Robin's Hill is about one mile and n-balf in length, but 20 chains near the top are in most need of metalling. One hundred and sixty yards of metal would be required for this part, at a probable cost of £BO. —lt was decided to obtain 40 yards of gravel to repair the road at Rockland's crossing.

Merton Riding.—Most of the new metal on Apes’s road has been raked in and a large culvert on the Bush road has been rebuilt and covered with broadleaf timber. A part of this road has been surfaced. Rotten rock is now being quarried for Vanes’s road and will be put on as soon as the road is dry. The work of raising four chains of the retaining wall at Karitane two feet higher is now completed and the road is being widened. Surfacing work has been done on Pryde’s and Russell’s roads. Several culverts on this road will have to be renewed with nine-inch pipes. Blueskin Riding.—A great amount of damage was done to the road and protective walls on Lower Harbour road by the storm and high tides at the beginning of the month, and a great quantity of stone, will be required to repair the damage, which extends over nearly four miles of the road. The most urgent of the work is being done, in filling some of the gaps in the road. The filling in of the wash-out on the Waitati River has had to be postponed owing to the rise in the river, but it is now fairly safe in the event of an ordinary flood. Ditches and water tables have been cleaned out in Waitati township, and metal is being quarried and broken to repair Quarry road. A portion of Wilson’s road at Evansdale has been surfaced, and the footpath at Purakanui is now being surfaced. A few chains of the retaining wall at Purakanui Bav requires repairs. The Port ChalmcrsWaitati road requires at least 600 yards of maintenance metal, at a probable cost of £250. One hundred yards are also wanted for the Purakanui roads, A shelter shed has been erected at the pound at Evansdale. —The chairman and Cr Briscoe were appointed to confer with Mr T. M. Ball regarding the necessary repairs to the damage on the Lower Harbour road. It was decided to procure 100 yards of metal from the crusher for' the Purakanui road.

North-East Valley Riding—The metal on Reservoir road has been raked in, and water tables cleaned out on the upper end of the road. Stone has been supplied by Mr Thomson, and is being broken to repair this road. The footpaths on Main road and Station road have been surfaced. The last-named road requires a coat of ashes or screenings.

Main Highways. Evansdale - Merton (via Seacliff) highway: Two culverts have been lengthened and (he road widened at several places near Warrington by filling subsidences on the side of the road. Water tables have been cleaned out on the same section of the road. The road is now being graded. Dunedin-Waitati (via Leith Valley) highway: Water tables have been cleaned out between the upper ford and Burns’s Crqck, and 20 yards of metal spread on the road. The river at the lower ford has been deepened, and the ford cleared of stone. Several small slips have been cleared.
