THE DIVERSION TUNNEL AT THE DAM.

Two views of the diversion ‘tunnel at the falls dam on the Manuherikia River. This tunnel is 10 chains long and 17 feet in diameter, fitted with control valves by means of which the water may be released as required. On the left is a view of the inlet end of the tunnel on the upstream side of the dam, and on the right is the outlet end, showing the river flowing through while construction work proceeds on the dam. This tunnel is fed from a spillway with a circular lip 100 feet in diameter which diminishes funnelwise down to the aperture of the tunnel.
