IRRIGATION ENGINEERING IN CENTRAL OTAGO.
A general view of the site of the irrigation dam on the Manulicrikia River just below the falls prior to the diversion of the river. The outlet of the diversion tunnel can be seen in the right foreground. The dam was just beginning to take shape when the photograph was taken. In the middle of the view the rock bank's of the dam can bo seen working out from either bank of the river. The picture is of interest in that it depicts the type of country in which the Public Works Department has now been at work for two years. The water from the dam will be released as required, and will flow ten miles down the bod of the river to a point near Blackstone Hill, where an intake will be erected as a starting point for the main race. The dam, which will cost £113,000 to build, is still uncompleted, but it is estimated by the district engineer of the department (Mr T. M. Ball) that the Upper Mamiherikia scheme which it will serve will be in operation by the commencement of the 1935-30 irrigation season.
