DYING AT THE WHEEL

EXHAUST FUMES IN CAR Just 100 vards from his home at Twickenham, Mr . William Henry Woollett, aged 33, commercial traveller, was fouild unconscious a few weeks ago at the wheel of his motor car. He died before medical aid could be summoned. A constable stated at the inquest that he discovered a, crack of recent date in the pipe leading from the engine to the exhaust of Mr Woolictt’s car. H hen the engine was ’ running fumes pentrated from underneath the car into the body. Evidence was given by a woman that she saw the car standing near her house with Mr Woollett Apparently asleep in the driver s seat. “Finding I could not wake him, added witness, “I took him in my arras, placed his head on my shoulder and felt his heart, which was just beating. A doctor stated that death was due to a goitre accelerated by carbon monoxide poisoning. The goitre had affected the man’s heart, and he had just cranked up his car. But for the goitre and this strain the carbon monoxide would not have affected him. A verdict in accordance with the medical testimony was returned.
