The reason for this ,is that dealers value the grading of furs for the London auctions as the highest guarantee that can be obtained. There can be no' scientific test to the value of a skin. The quality and consequent market value must be the opinion of an individual expert. The world’s fur dealers are always prepared to back the Opinion of the English expert and take his valuation without question. Valuable furs are consigned to the London brokers and sold' periodically at what are called the raw fur sales. The pelts are tanned, lint they arc not actually ready to be worn, and so are termed “ raw.” Real sable , skins may fetch as much as £IOO each at such a sale, while coney, .is, pro-, portionately far lower in price. But no matter what sort of pelt it is, the London “hall mark” fixes the price in whatever part of the world it is sold.
