Vice-Regal. His Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) will visit Christchurch for Carnival Week early in August. He will arrive on the morning of August 10, and on the evening of the following day he will perform the opening ceremony of the Winter Show and Exhibition. His Excellency will remain in Christchurch until August 20, during which time he will fulfil a number of engagements, most of which have not yet been definitely arranged. The vice-regal party will come to Dunedin after leaving Christchurch, and will spend three days here before returning to Wellington. It is not yet known whether this will be Bledisloe’s last visit to Dunedin before he leaves New Zealand. Mr H. Harraway returned to Dunedin on Thursday night after a visit to the north. Mr R. Kinnaird, president of the Otago Division of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, returned to Dunedin yesterday from Wellington. Messrs C. K. Sheat and E. H. Murney arrived in Dunedin by the express from the north last evening after attending a sitting of the Mortgagors’ Adjustment Commission in Oamaru. Mr A. E. Ford, manager of the Auckland Transport Board for the past 12 years, will leave for England next month. He expects (reports a Press Association telegram) to investigate the latest transport development. Mr R. H. Bartley, manager of the. Auckland Power Board, will also leave next month for England to investigate electrical power development. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that Mr H. R. Nesbitt, the Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, was unable to sail by the Wanganella on Monday owing to influenza, and his departure for New Zealand has been temporarily postponed. At a tea given on Thursday night in honour of the birthday of Colonel E. R. Smith members of the Otago Officers' Club paid tribute to the enthusiasm which Colonel Smith had always shown in matters.affecting defence. The president (Captain I. W. Cowie) offered congratulations on behalf of the club, and a presentation to the guest of the evening was made by Major 0. H. Mead. During the evening mention was made of the fact that Colonel Smith had joined the military forces in 1869. . . At the monthly meeting of the Taien County Council yesterday fitting tribute to the memory of Cr J. W. Blair, who had represented the Outram Riding on the council from 1905 until the time of his death, was paid by the chairman (Cr C. Findlay), who said that they all recognised Mr Blair’s great ability and wide knowledge of local body law and procedure, and his business training had been of great benefit to the council in its deliberations. His forceful speech and strong personality had helped in no small measure to carry through to a successful issue many of the reading works and other amenities now possessed by Taieri ratepayers. During his 29 years’ term of office ns a councillor Cr Blair bad filled the position of chairman at intervals over a period of nine years with unquestioned impartiality and with credit to the oil and himself. Other speakers endorsed the chairman’s remarks, and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in the usual manner. Mr Bassett D. Ferrar, whose- home is now at Fairlie. and who has had an extended holiday in the North Island, arrived here on Wednesday last, and intends staying for a few we°ks with his son at Anderson’s Bay._ He will then visit Invercargill, returning home in September.
