ST. KILDA MUNICIPAL BAND

ANNUAL MEETING Thera was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the St. Kilda Municipal Band, which was held last night., Mr J. L. Gardiner occupied the chair. The Mayor of Dunedin (the Rev. E. T. Cox) was also present. Before commencing the business the chairman 1 referred to the death of the president (Mr E. H. Lough), who had held the position since 1927. Two vicepresidents (Messrs G. Sinclair and I. Peters) had also died during the year. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in the usual manner. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sneet, the chairman congratulated the executive on the successful year the band had had. It was to be regretted that, the Australian trip had not been possible.* A committee had been set up to give assistance in the matter, and he was sure support would have been forthcoming. Unfortunately several members had been unable to obtain leave, ond the proposal had had to be abandoned.

Seconding the motion Mr W. Yeoman said that he thought the receipts from the rotunda concerts should be larger. Other avenues by which finance had been obtained were now closed, and the, position in future would have to be carefully watched. Because of this financial aspect he thought it was perhaps as well that the Australian trip had not been arranged. It would have involved very heavy expense, which might have affected the band’s condition for some years to come.

The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —President, Mr J. L. Gardiner; vice-president—Messrs J. D. Hunter, R. Maxwell, A. E. Moorhead, O. G. Miller, E’ C. Begg, J. Loudon,, R. MacLellan, E. Long worth. G. J. Errington, W. K. Cameron, A. Newall. A. Wardrop. H Turley, J. Leech, F. W. Cleavin, A. Chambers, and A. C. Haynes; conductor, Mr J. Dixon; deputy conductors, Messrs G. Christie and C. Miller; secretary, Mr A. G, Homer; treasurer, Mr W. L. Paterson; drum-major, Mr W. Donaldson; accompanist, Miss - Sybil Baker; librarian and custodian, Mr W. Wallace: auditor. Mr G. Davidson: committee —Messrs T Williams, C. Miller, G,, Christie, A, Harrod, W. Smith, A. Winsladc.

At the conclusion of the meeting & social was held.

Proposing the toast of the mayors and councillors of Dunedin and St. Kilda, Mr Gardiner expressed the appreciation of the band for the efforts which these councils had made in connection with the visit to Ballarat. The Mayor of Dunedin bad given the project his full consideration, and had regularly attended the committee meetings. From the Mayor and councillors of St. Kilda the band had received the ready support which it had had in previous years. Mr Cox eaid that, personally, he had not been able to help the band very much, although he had done all he could to further the proposed visit to Australia, ile regretted that the visit had not 'beep possible. Mr J. A. Carman, replying on behalf of the Mayor and councillors of St. Kilda, said that the baud was a credit to the city as well as to St. Kilda.

The toast of " The President ’’ was proposed by the Mayor, who remarked that besides congratulating Mr Gardiner on his appointment, he must also congratulate the band on obtaining a man of his character and ability for the position. Mr Gardiner suitably replied. Other toast* honoured during the evening were “The President and the Vicepresidents,” proposed by Mr W. Yeoman and responded to by Messrs J. D. Hunter, G. 'J. Errington, W. K. Cameron and A. E. Moorhead; “St. Kilda Band” (Mr A. Newall and Mr G. Christie); “The Drummajor” (Mr A. G. Homer); “The Conductor” (Mr B.
