MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago A. and P. Society was held in the board room, Agricultural Hall buildings, Crawford street, yesterday afternoon. Members present were: Messrs R. T. Kirk (president) in the chair, L. C. Hazlett, John Mitchell, H. M. Driver, Edgar 0. Hazlett, John Allison, B. S. Irwin, D. M. Iteid, S. Bowman, A. Johnson, James Begg, H. C. Campbell, E. M. North, T. D. Dalziel, J. B. Blair, E. Bolwell, A. Campbell, William Lee, D. Andrew, D. Craighead, R. Gawn, E. F.. Duthie, P. J. Conn, J. Hellyer, and D. Ireland. A motion of sympathy was passed with the family of the late Mr William -M'Lachlan, who, at the last Summer Show, was one of the society's honorary stewards on the sawing and wood-chop-ping competitions. The president welcomed the newly elected members of the committee. He congratulated Mr James Begg on his appointment to the directorate of the Reserve Bank, and also on behalf of the A. and P. Society congratulated Mr R. Hudson on his election to the Reserve Bank Directorate. Reference was also made to Mr H. C. Campbell's reappointment to the chairmanship of the Harbour Board. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS. The Finance and Executive Committees which met on June 19 reported as follows: —Accounts amounting to £873 2s were recommended for payment. Recommendation as to the formation of extra sub-committees to assist at the Winter Show were noted and it was resolved that the matter be again reviewed at the committee meeting in February, 1935. A statement of receipts and expenditure for the recent Winter Show was submitted by the secretary, and the result was noted with approval. Furflier suggestions by the executive tor a revisal of the rules and amendments and other matters were approved. NEW MEMBERS. The following were proposed and duly elected as members: —Messrs Donald M'Leod (Gimmerburn), James Herlihy (Patearoa), James H. Cotton (Bellamy Station, Evan's Flat), Evans Bros. (Longbush), Dominion Fertilizer Company (Dunedin), G. S. Kirby (accountant, Dunedin), W. R. Brown (accountant, Dunedin), Frederick Hellyer (NorthEast Harbour), Turnbuli and Jones (Dunedin), Crust and Crust (Dunedin), T. R. Taylor (Rco Garage, Dunedin), International Harvester Company (Dunedin), Yorkshire Insurance Company (Dunedin), J. R. Fairbairu (Fairbairn, Henderson, and Co.), Sparrow and Sons, H. Down Roberts (Middlcmarch), W. Kirk (Mosgiel), New Zealand Wax Vesta Company (Dunedin), and Partcls Garage (Dunedin). CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter was received from Mr A. W. Beaven, past president of the Christchurch Manufacturers' Association, complimenting the society on the recent Winter Show. A letter from the secretary of the New Zealand" Farmers' Union (Otago branch) in reference to conduct of the Ram and Ewe Fair was referred to the Sheep Committee for consideration. EMBARGO ON IMPORTATION OF LIVE STOCK. A member drew attention to a newspaper report of an interview given a Dominion reporter by Dr E. C. Barnutt, of Palmerstou North, a practical farmer, who considered that unless the importation of stud stock proportionally kept pace with Australia New Zealand would be,left behind. He also pointed out that the latest work in the disease proved that it was almost impossible on account of the virulence of the vims for any

beast to be a carrier without contracting the disease. Dr Barnett said the maximum incubation period was 14 days and . with proper quarantine conditions at Home and here in New Zealand there was practically no risk.—lt was pointed out that copies of Mr Begg's resolution had been posted to the principal A. and P. societies throughout New Zealand, a number of which replied seconding the proposal while-others had framed resolutions on a part with that passed at the October meeting last year. EXPORT LAMB COMPETITION. The secretary reported that with the generous support of Mr K.' Clark (manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company) and his staff the representation of Central Otago in the export lamb competition was assured for the forthcoming competition. It was proposed to hold a live competition at the Maniototo Show at Ranfurly on December 7, and prize-winning lambs from thai centre would be railed to Burnside, where lambs from other parts of the province would be assembled and killed at a field day at the Burnside works on December 8, where all exhibitors would be the guests of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company. TROPHIES. The New Zealand Friesian Association (Auckland) wrote that at a meeting of the council of the association held in Auckland on May 31 it was resolved to award the South Island 1934-5 Season Friesian Championship (Bull and Cow) to the Otago A. and P. Society at the Summer Show in November.— The secretary reported that he had gojd authority for reporting that there was every prospect of a trophy being offered for most points in fat sheep and lambs at the Summer Show, and he also reported that Mr James Scott, of Opoho, who last year donated a silver cup for most points in the Clydesdale horsebreeding section and this year offered a £5 5s cup for most points in fleece wool, purposed increasing the. value of the latter and already it was anticipated that next, year's show would have double the number of wool exhibits.—On the motion of Mr A. Johnson it was resolved to have a meeting of the Fat Stock Committee before the next committee meeting to review the schedule for next shows. A comprehensive vote of thanks was passed to all those who had assisted towards the success of the show.
