During the last few weeks the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s dredge Canterbury has been under overhaul, and during that time automatic stokers have been fitted In the boiler, room. The fitting of the stokers Is to obviate the serious nuisance caused at times in the past by the thick smoke discharged from the vessel’s funnel, and. at the same time, It Is expected that the innovation will show a saving in fuel consumption. The system used Is that by which the coal is fed Into hoppers from which it Is conveyed into the furnace by a worm drive. Instead of the usual method of placing large quantities of coal In the fire-box by hand, which Is the principal cause of the dense smoke, the coal will be fed to the fire gradually and continuously, the speed of the conveyor being regulated In accordance with the head of steam necessary. The coal Is fed up from the bottom of the fire-box, resulting In more complete combustion.
