YOUNG MIGRANTS
CHILDREN FOR DOMINIONS PRINCE SUPPORTS PROPOSAL. LONDON, June 6. Owing to the success of the Fairbridge Schools in Western Australia, it is suggested that the scheme should be extended to enable hundreds of children, mostly orphans, to go to the dominions each year. With this object in view, the Lord President of the Council, Mr Baldwin, will launch an appeal on June 14, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Marquess of Salisbury, Lord Lothian, Mr Amory, Dame Sybil Thorndike, and Mr E. R. Peacock, a director of the Bank of England, in a letter to The Times, announce that the Prince of Wales has given his support. The letter, which states that the British Government will support the appeal, emphasises the prevailing atmosphere of happiness in the schools, and points out that perhaps the best proof of their success is the fact that, in spite of the depression, not only is there no unemployment among former *Fairbridge scholars, but that the demand for.these boys and girls cannot be met. It is explained that the children are trained in the schools for five years, and as there is no immediate prospect of their affecting unemployment in the dominions, the latter will be asked to co-operate. Canada already has intimated her readiness to do so. The letter states that three Fairbridge schools could be established for £IOO,OOO.
