STAGE SURPRISE
END OF ENGAGEMENT. After just one week the engagement between Miss Victoria . Hopper, the young stage and film star, and Mr Basil Dean, the producer, was broken off “ by mutual consent.” In the course of an interview in her dressing room at Drury lane Miss Hopper stated: . “I suppose it is rather sudden. It is just one of those things that happen. The reason? That is difficult to answer. Really it is, because I have decided that it would be unwise to mix up my career with marriage. That is the real reason.” Miss Hopper said she hoped Mr Dean would direct her in many more films. “ I have a great admiration for him," «hc added. >, Twelve months ago Miss Hopper, who is 25, was unknown. She rose to fame through her portrayal of a shy village girl in- “Martine” at the Ambassadors Theatre, and of Tessa in the film version of “ The Constant Nymph.” Mr Basil Dean, who is 45, has long been ft prominent figure in connection with both stage and screen. He selectel Miss Hopper to play in “ The Constant Nymph," and their friendship began during the production of the film.
