ALEXANDRA The monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr W. Bringans) presiding over a full council. The District Highways Board Council wrote agreeing to the payment of a further £29 9s to enable the crown of the main road to be raised to a satisfactory height. The Public Works engineer also wrote regarding the time the road inquired to be maintained by the contractors.

The Vincent Hospital Board wrote notifying that the council's levy for the current year would be £BB 5s. —Received. The Local Bodies’ Loans. Board wrote sanctioning the raising of a loan for £2OOO for the erection of workers’ dwellings, but refusing to sanction the raising of the £3OOO applied for. The rate of interest would be 4 per cent. —Received. Tlie librarian, Dunedin Public Library, wrote concerning the council’s inquiries as to the position in connection with fees payable by non-residente of the borough for membership to the library. The writer suggested applying to the Carnegie Corporation of New York, or to the librarian of the Timaru Library.—lt was decided that the clerk should communicate with the Timaru Library. * The Palmerston North Borough Council wrote in connection with the payments to unemployed men, and asked the council’s support in objecting to the Unemployment Board’s latest sustenance scheme at the reduced rates. —It was decided to reply that Alexandra was under the mining scheme, and the district was not affected by the change. The Unemployment Board wrote advising that a certain number of trees would be available for afforestation purposes this season.—lt was decided to procure 5000 for planting in August. The Mayor reported that the council had purchased the two acres and a-half of property held by Mr E. J.-Terry, and that the council had already sold six of the 10 sections. Accounts totalling £720 2s lid were passed for payment. CLYDE Golferg from the Omakau Club travelled to Clyde on Saturday afternoon, when the home team proved too good for the visitors, winning 12 out of the 18 games. Scores (Clyde names first): —W. M. Mullins, 64—19 —45. • A euchre tournament was held m the Catholic Hall on Friday last. There was a good attendance. The ladies’ prize; was won by Airs H. Kearney and the mens trophy by Air W. Love. Skating was in full swing on the ponds at Ranfurly and Naseby on Sunday last, but a thaw set in early on Alonday morning. Keen black ice is appearing on the sheltered parts of some of the Naseby ponds, and the curlers are quite confident that the ice will be suitable for curling in a week or so. LAWRENCE t The series of eight matches under the control of the South Tuapeka Sub-union were played on Saturday. On the Lawrence Recreation Ground Lawrence beat Beaumont by 3 points to nil. At Wnitahuna the match between Tuapeka Aloutb and Waitahuna resulted in a draw, 3 points each. Lawrence and Waitahuna are now running equal in the banner competition. They will meet on the Lawrence ground next Saturday.
