Mojtdat, June 11. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.H.) DRUNKENNESS. Charles William Chapman, who had one previous conviction for the same offence within six months, was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment for drunkenness. William George Riddle, who had been in the cells over the week-end, was fined 2s 6d, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. George Henry Theodore pleaded guilty to a charge, of stealing a quantity of butter, ham. and milk, valued at 2s 3d, the property of the Otago Hospital Board. —Chief Detective Young said that for the past eight years The accused had been employed as a,.cook by the Otago Hospital Board.' Sortie months ago the authorities began to miss foodstuffs from the kitchen, and a watch was kept, with the result: that: the • accused- was found, .leaving the premises with a pound of butter, a quantity of ham, and a bottle of milk in his possession. The accused and the other members of the staff were warned as recently as last Saturday that unless the thefts of ‘ foodstuffs ceased, drastic action would- be taken. The theft was a particularly mean one as it deprived the patients in the hospital of their full rations. The accused Was in a good position and there had been no reason why he should steal.
