GREAT TRIBUTE TO SPURGEON

“ ENGLAND HATH NEED OF THEE.'’ (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, April 26. At the centenary celebration of the Rev. Charles HaJdou Spurgeon, the worldfamouns divine, Mr, Karnsay MacDonald paid an eloquent tribute. “It was the pageantry of Calvinism which inspired Spurgeon, he said. “it was the strong doctrine of Calvinism not interpreted by pettifogging and formal logic, but interpreted by experience and life itself which in his personality contained them all. “Mr Spurgeon is a testimony to the living moving creative power of the spoken word, providing it comes from a well-stored mind. “ In these days one regrets the decline of the pulpit and of the spoken word. The inspired word, the sincere word—what mountains can it not remove. Such was his conception of life, time, and eternity, and such his being that at this time in every corner of the world men utter his name in gratitude, wonder thankfulness, an 1 reverence Would that this led to a resurrection in our midst of his qualities. We may say: ‘Spurgeon, thou shouldst be living at this hour; England hath need of thee.’ ” Representatives of ’ the Baptist denomination were present, not only irom all parts of the country, but also from America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Prominent members of other denominations also attended.
